Description Sergei Bubka
Gouache
2007

This is a painting I did of Sergei Bubka, the greatest pole vaulter in history, for my friend Base, who was a pretty good pole vaulter for University of Miami at the beginning of this decade. It was done in gouache paint and modeled in on some of the great soviet propaganda posters of the last century. That is why the inscription is in Russian and reads, "For Russia I compete, for The Party I fly." (I do not speak Russian so if the text is off please forgive me.) Base and I do not see each other as much as either of us would like due to work, so we have to try and show each other we still care about the other in different ways. For him this means regularly sending me articles about art and illustrations he likes, and for me it means every once and a while actually doing art or illustration for him. I did this for him for his birthday one year and it hangs in his law office today. The reason for it being such a bad photo is that I did not have a chance to photograph it for my portfolio before I gave it to him, and have not had the opportunity to run by his office and photograph it myself... so I asked him to do it, and he took the photo with his phone. (grumble, grumble)
