Description     In 1931, a cartoon you may or may not remember premiered that debuted the love of Blinky’s life, Penny. This cartoon was Blinky’s first sing-along known as Flowers and Balloons and features the song of the same name. From the moment Blinky laid eyes on Penny, he knew that they were meant to be together.

So what’s the best way to win a girl’s heart? Gifts, of course! So Blinky buys a bouquet. But after it gets ruined, he makes it into a flower crown. Then to get Penny’s attention, he used the last of his money to buy a bunch of balloons and used them to fly up to her bedroom window. Then as soon as the crown was placed on her head, it was like a king had found her queen.

After that, they both fly via balloon and sing the titular song. Flowers and Balloons as a song would then go on to be one of the most memorable in the series, even having its melody play during certain other episodes in the future. Even after the cartoon series was canceled and forgotten, the song remained remembered through being covered by several other musical artists starting with a record album in 1973.

And to think that this cartoon was originally meant to be Penny’s only appearance! That’s right! While making Flowers and Balloons, Jackson had originally intended Penny to be a one shot character, not even giving her a name at the time. This was due to him originally not wanting Blinky to have a generic look-alike lover. But after the toon’s titular song became a popular hit, even scoring the studio an award, Penny would reappear in future episodes with her official name.
