Description
Janice followed along the trail, avoiding the tall grass.  It was less than promising for her to fight at the moment.  She'd rather take her chances with a self-obsessed trainer than fight a hungry, menacing Pokémon.  Her eyes flickered in the twilight, as she looked for him, knowing he should be heading home soon.  There was a bench to the right of her, and she decided she would wait for him.
Janice jumped onto the bench, sitting on her hind legs.  She looked around and saw the emptiness enveloping her.  She definitely wasn't near Hearthome City anymore.  It was so quiet and lonely here.  All of the younger Pokémon she'd helped raise in her youth had grown and moved on, not needing her care anymore.  She missed the excitement and rush they'd given her.
"Found you!" He jumped onto the trail, his front legs extended toward her.  Janice jumped back on the bench, startled from his approach.
"Cody!" She laughed.  "Don't scare me like that!"  Janice slunk off the bench, lowering her head as she circled him slowly.  "Do you want to be my next meal?"
Cody sat up and stuck his nose in the air.  "What are you gonna do, Janice?  Attack me?"  He looked at his paw and stretched his tendons, ignoring her circling.
Janice pulled her body back, springing herself like a coil, and after stretching far enough, she pounced on Cody, tumbling on top of him.  "Don't underestimate me." She smiled as she looked down at Cody, who was a little surprised she'd actually caught him.
"..I let you catch me you know." He said as she cocked her head to the side.  Cody then unravelled his body from hers, shaking the dirt from his fur.  "If I was actually trying, there's no way you would have pinned me."  Cody stuck his nose up again.
"Uh huh." Janice gave him his moment.  "So, where is dinner?" She asked, as she used her eyes to scan the grass he'd jumped from.
"Stop that!" Cody yelled as he saw her eyes gleaming.  "I want it to be a surprise!"  You head back to the den, and I'll bring it with me…"

Janice bounced back to their den, unable to contain her excitement.  She'd managed to pin Cody, and he'd managed to catch something, all in one day!  That had to be a good sign!  Janice was so caught up in the moment, she'd failed to notice the Pokémon tagging her.  It wasn't until she'd felt something bite onto her leg that she saw the small Eevee clamped to her leg.  Janice jumped, but the Pokémon was too small to do too much damage.  She briskly kicked the Eevee off her leg and the Eevee made a strange whining sound.
Janice walked over to the small creature and nuzzled its side.  "Are you all right?" The Eevee stood up, but didn't respond.  It just stared at her, blood pooling at the corner of its eyes.  Janice then smelled something awful; a pungent odour that was foul to all of the senses… It was the Eevee.  It had cuts all over its face, and its left ear looked rotted and deformed.  Its body had a greenish brown tinge to it, and its tail was twisted and mangled; poor creature must have been dying.  The small creature shivered and shook and Janice couldn't help but take pity on it.  She loved all Pokémon, even the small and broken ones.  Besides, Sunny had been an Eevee, different as she was, and Janice loved her all the same.
"Are you hungry?" She asked the Eevee, knowing Cody would be along soon with his catch.  The small Eevee made a high pitched purring sound, which Janice could only take as a yes.  She led the Eevee back to their den and laid down beside the freezing Pokémon.
Soon after they'd settled down in the den, Janice could hear Cody rustling the leaves on the ground outside.  He poked his head inside the den, missing the Eevee curled up beside Janice and spoke to her.  "Um, I don't mean to be a bother… but the catch isn't going to fit in the den."  Janice's ears perked up.  What in Arceus' name could he have caught?
Janice stood up carefully, slowly rousing the Eevee awake and walked outside.  Her jaw dropped and a huge smile plastered onto Cody's face.  "Pretty impressive, huh?" He asked her, infatuated with pride.
Janice looked on the ground in front of her, and couldn't believe her eyes.  "…You caught a Tauros?"
Cody's tail wagged happily.  "Well, kind of.  It actually walked into an electric fence... Stupid, thing." Cody fluttered over and sat down by Janice. "It was pretty easy to kill after that."
The small Eevee, starving and scared, decided it would be best not to mess with Cody.  Quickly, it yanked one of the Tauros' legs off and ran, dragging the leg with it.
"Hey!" Cody snarled at the small creature.  He was about to hunt it down when Janice stopped him.
"Let it go.  It's done us no harm." Janice said to him in the soothing voice she used so often with him.  She gave Cody a nuzzle, and then headed for the midsection of the Tauros.  They would be eating good tonight.

Janice woke up abruptly, a throbbing in her leg.  She couldn't see in the darkness, and she knew using her Gleam Eyes, would wake up Cody.  She didn't want that.  She slowly uncoiled her body from his, letting his head gently rest on the bed of twigs in their den.  She walked outside and the throbbing worsened with every step she took.
Maybe the bite the Eevee had given her was infected?  That wouldn't make sense, it barely broke the skin.  It did look fairly sick though.  Janice walked quietly through the tall grass, knowing there was a stream nearby.  She could hear the water running from here.  One quick walk to the river, and she would clean the cut.  Janice walked into the water, letting the cool current soothe her aching leg.  After standing in the stream for a couple of minutes, and feeling a little more reassured about the condition of her leg, Janice stepped out of the stream, and snuck back to the den.  Her leg still throbbed, but she was much less concerned.  Tired and weary, still filled from their feast that night, Janice curled up beside Cody and fell back asleep.

Cody was the first to rise.  He yawned and stretched his body, easing the tension of his tightened muscles.  He nuzzled Janice's face, prompting her to awake.  Janice slowly stirred and smiled at Cody, her eyes, only partially open.  "Good morning." He said to her lowly.
"Good morning." She replied.  Cody walked out of the den and started jumping around, attempting to waken himself further.
Janice sprawled out on the bed of twigs before pulling herself to her feet.  The moment, she did stand, though, she remembered that night because the throbbing in her leg was back, and it was much more intense.  Janice limped out of the den, so that she could see the wound, realizing she'd forgotten to look last night.  She craned her head to see her hind leg, and gasped at the sight.  Her leg not only looked infected, but gangrenous.
"Cody!?" Janice yelled, panicked.
Cody quickly walked over to her.  "What is it?" He asked her concerned.  "What's wrong?"
"My leg." Janice said cautiously as she nodded towards the festering of her hind leg.
"Oh my…" Cody crouched down and took a closer look at her leg.  "What happened?"  He licked her leg once, but quicky pulled back his tongue and nose.  "Unghh, your leg smells like rotting flesh."
"Thanks." Janice growled. "You make me feel so special sometimes."
"What happened?" Cody asked again.  He looked back at her and noticed she was bowing in a saddened fashion.
"Well, that Eevee from last night bit my leg, but I didn't think this would happen…"  Janice's lip pouted as she thought about how something so small could do so much damage.
"Hmm, we could go try cleaning your leg in the stream.  Come on." He commanded.  Janice was about to tell him that she'd already tried that, but he was determined to help, and maybe a little more water might fix things.

The two made their way to the stream and Cody walked in first.  Janice followed him, and the two stood in the middle, the waters splashing at their face.
"Hey," Cody said as he lifted her lowered head up with his nose. "This doesn't have to be all doom-and-gloom." He said to her, his voice suddenly cheerful.  "Let's see who can catch the most fish while we're here!" He smiled as he whisked away down the stream, diving under the water.  Janice laughed as the current fumbled him around, like a loose rock.
She looked down into the stream, and noticed a Magikarp staring at her wound, or at least that's what she assumed it would be staring at, since their eyes kind of just dart off in any which direction.  Janice slowly coiled her muscles, ready to pounce like she had when she'd caught Cody, and jumped onto the Magikarp.  It splashed her trying to wriggle away from her paws, but this catch was hers.  She sunk her teeth into the Magikarp until it stopped moving.  Yes!  She'd caught it!  Her father would be proud of her if he was still around.
"I cau-t u-ne!" Janice murmured out, the fish in her mouth.  Cody popped his head out from under the water and smiled.
Janice followed this scheme a few more times.  The Magikarp would stare at her leg, she would snatch it up, and brag to Cody, who had yet to catch a fish.  Her pile was stacking up, his stayed empty.  I guess he was going hungry tonight; well, maybe she would share.
The two laughed and joked amongst one another on their walk back to the den.  Since Janice was feeling a little better about her leg, they decided to take the long, scenic path avoiding the tall grass.  As they walked, Cody carrying Janice's catch, she remembered why she'd fallen in love with Cody.  It was that self motivation and determination; that drive; that sense of adventure he had that reflected hers.  They both wanted to be on the move, exploring, seeking new places and friends; although he was happy just being near her.  She loved that he loved to travel, and that's also how they ended up here... in the butt of nowhere.  This was temporary though.  They would stay here until the winter set in and then they would head south, to the warmer climates.
Janice really yearned to go back to Hearthome for a while actually.  She had been raised there herself and had raised a few generations of adopted Pokémon there as well.  Sunny was still in Hearthome; she pretty much lived in Amity Square, since she was so beautiful to look at, trainers would travel there just to see her.  Janice would tell Sunny all about her and Cody's adventures, and how they'd made it all the way to Sunyshore once.  Sunny would 'ooh' and 'aah' at her story and then Janice would tell Sunny that she missed them all being together.
Janice lowered her head.  She did miss Sunny, as well as the others.  Cody was nice to be with, but it wasn't the same.
"Is something wrong?" Cody asked her, noticing her change in pace.
"…Do you think we could go back to Hearthome for a while after this?" Janice asked, looking up at Cody.
Cody raised his head in thought for a moment.  "I guess we could." He smiled at her.  "As long as you don't make me talk to that thing." Cody quickly added, speaking of Sunny.  "I can't stand that little green ball of grass; she's just too annoying for my tastes."
Janice giggled and rubbed up against Cody.  "She likes you, you know." She told him seriously.  "She only acts rude and obnoxious around people she knows and trusts."
Cody snuffed at her.  "Well, fine." He said as he pushed back against her body.  "I guess we can go back soon…"

Janice woke up late in the night again, her chest hurting this time.  Janice couldn't take the waiting this time, and used her Gleam Eyes, lighting up the den.
Cody awoke, angrily, scuffing at the ground.  "What are you doing?" He snarled, as he looked over at her, rubbing his eyes.
Janice was in too much horror to scream.  Her chest fur had shed off, and the skin rotted away, showing her muscle and tissues.  "Cody, what's happening to me?"
Cody stood up as best he could in the den, and pawed at underneath their bed.  Sunny had given the two a scarf as a parting gift when the two had set out together, and Cody dug for it desperately.  Finally, his claw had caught it and he pulled it out from the twigs.  He put it in his mouth and wrapped it firmly around Janice's neck, covering the open wound.  "I don't know what else to do!" Cody whined, worried about Janice's well being.
"I don't either!" She cried.  The two locked heads, and sobbed, unsure what else could be done, the two cried themselves back to sleep.

Cody was afraid.  Janice limped when she walked, and her fur was losing its colour.  She was shedding everywhere, which he already thought was unpleasant, but the large chunks of fur all over the den was enough to set him off.
"Okay." He told his sickly mate.  "We're going back to Hearthome." He said boldly.  "If anyone will know what to do for you, it will be Sunny."  Cody said as he nuzzled her nose.
"Hhhthf." Janice's tongue flopped out of her mouth as she tried to agree with him.
Cody's eyes watered as he helped her along the path.  Tall grass wasn't an option, since he couldn't defend them both, and he didn't think any trainers would be willing to fight such a disease-infested creature.
And Cody was right.  All the trainers on the path did everything possible to avoid the two Luxrays.  Some even dived into the tall grass when the two neared.  No one was willing to help though; they were too busy getting distance to help the sick and weak Pokémon.
"Thhtfh thhfpt" Janice spat as she looked up at Cody's hazed silhouette.
"You'll be all right." Cody told her as they slowed their pace, Janice's eyes watering.  Cody nuzzled her again, but this only made it worse.  Janice felt so useless.  The pain was so intense now, she couldn't really feel anything; her whole body was numb.
After they'd gotten a little further, Janice stopped and sat down, her tongue still hanging out of her mouth.  "Ftth" She whined.
Cody sat down beside her, and licked her cheek.  Janice rubbed up against him for a moment, before standing up awkwardly and picking up a stick.  She pulled the stick around in the dirt for a moment, before putting it down and looking at Cody.
Cody stood up and attempted to read what she'd staked in the dirt.  Do you still love me?  Cody looked at Janice and gave her a weakened smile.  "Of course I still love you!" Cody told her as he wrapped his neck around hers.   "Nothing that can happen will ever stop me from loving you."
Janice made a squeaking purring sound and pulled away from Cody, so that she could look at his face.  She smiled broadly, and licked his nose happily.  She needed to hear that right now.
Cody sighed and sat down on the trail.  "It's getting dark; let's lay down for the night…"

Cody woke up to the sound of struggling.  He propped his head up and used his Gleam Eyes.  He saw Janice, flailing in place.  "Are you all right?"  Nothing could prepare him for what happened next.
Janice launched up and latched onto Cody's neck, biting deep into his flesh.  Cody yelped and kicked Janice off.  He stood up quickly to notice Janice coming at him again, her eyes glowing with a white mist.
"Janice, it's me!  Cody!" He knocked her to the ground again.
Janice landed hard on her side, her ribs breaking from the impact.  She let out a blood-curdling howl, her eye popping out of its socket.
"Janice?!" Cody rushed to her side, afraid that she was badly hurt.
Janice closed her eyes, and laid down.  She didn't move again.
"Janice?!!" Cody nuzzled her, trying to make her move, or breathe, or yell; any sign of life would have been nice.   "…I love you." He told her softly, hoping this might stir her awake.  After several attempts, Cody rested his head on Janice's immobile body and closed his eyes; his sould dying along with hers...

"Okay." He told his sickly mate.  "We're going back to Hearthome." He said boldly.  "If anyone will know what to do for you, it will be Sunny."  Cody said as he nuzzled her nose.
"Hhhthf." Janice's tongue flopped out of her mouth as she tried to agree with him.
Cody's eyes watered as he helped her along the path.  Tall grass wasn't an option, since he couldn't defend them both, and he didn't think any trainers would be willing to fight such a disease-infested creature.
And Cody was right.  All the trainers on the path did everything possible to avoid the two Luxrays.  Some even dived into the tall grass when the two neared.  No one was willing to help though; they were too busy getting distance to help the sick and weak Pokémon.
"Thhtfh thhfpt" Janice spat as she looked up at Cody's hazed silhouette.
"You'll be all right." Cody told her as they slowed their pace, Janice's eyes watering.  Cody nuzzled her again, but this only made it worse.  Janice felt so useless.  The pain was so intense now, she couldn't really feel anything; her whole body was numb.
After they'd gotten a little further, Janice stopped and sat down, her tongue still hanging out of her mouth.  "Ftth" She whined.
Cody sat down beside her, and licked her cheek.  Janice rubbed up against him for a moment, before standing up awkwardly and picking up a stick.  She pulled the stick around in the dirt for a moment, before putting it down and looking at Cody.
Cody stood up and attempted to read what she'd staked in the dirt.  Do you still love me?  Cody looked at Janice and gave her a weakened smile.  "Of course I still love you!" Cody told her as he wrapped his neck around hers.   "Nothing that can happen will ever stop me from loving you."
Janice made a squeaking purring sound and pulled away from Cody, so that she could look at his face.  She smiled broadly, and licked his nose happily.  She needed to hear that right now.
Cody sighed and sat down on the trail.  "It's getting dark; let's lay down for the night…"

Cody woke up to the sound of struggling.  He propped his head up and used his Gleam Eyes.  He saw Janice, flailing in place.  "Are you all right?"  Nothing could prepare him for what happened next.
Janice launched up and latched onto Cody's neck, biting deep into his flesh.  Cody yelped and kicked Janice off.  He stood up quickly to notice Janice coming at him again, her eyes glowing with a white mist.
"Janice, it's me!  Cody!" He knocked her to the ground again.
Janice landed hard on her side, her ribs breaking from the impact.  She let out a blood-curdling howl, her eye popping out of its socket.
"Janice?!" Cody rushed to her side, afraid that she was badly hurt.
Janice closed her eyes, and laid down.  She didn't move again.
"Janice?!!" Cody nuzzled her, trying to make her move, or breathe, or yell; any sign of life would have been nice.   "…I love you." He told her softly, hoping this might stir her awake.  After several attempts, Cody rested his head on Janice's immobile body and closed his eyes; his sould dying along with hers...

Janice was the first to rise.  She yawned and stretched her body, easing the tension of her tightened muscles.  She nuzzled Cody's face, prompting him to awake.  Cody slowly stirred and smiled at Janice, his eyes, only partially open.  "Good morning." She said to him lowly.
"Good morning." He replied.  Janice walked out onto the trail and started jumping around, attempting to waken herself further.

It was a good day to be dead.
