an outstanding work.. it isnt easy to have a so beautiful trails.. also the choose of 24mm (25) is great because with lower focal lenght you will have a distortion in startrails. Great work in every way

This looks great! I really want to try such a photo myself. But your result looks very good! I like the black shadow of the tower and the perfect circle of 25min waiting

I like shooting star wheels and that antenna seemed to be the perfect foreground.

Thank you Zoran
I am thinking about shooting it again with my new 14mm [link] sometime this winter. Although the thought of standing out there [link] in subzero weather does not appeal to me but it’s for art so maybe I will.

Do that. Your VLBA photos is the best of this kind of photo.

All three are basically the same but quite different (if that makes any sense). VLBA 02 is the closest to real life in that the antenna is not actually illuminated.

Very nice! The composition is perfect. Just wish my camera would hold up to 25 minutes of shutter, mine overheats after just a couple! 18 minutes looked bad, but I uploaded it on here anyways

Thank you
Of the three it is the most realistic. This is what the VLBA really looks like at night only it is really much darker. There are no lights.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CorazondeDios In reply to JAHarrell [2008-05-29 09:32:11 +0000 UTC]

yeah, cameras are magnificent beasts, allowing us to see what our eyes cannot perceive. But this one definitely is closer to what I'd really be looking at out there in the desert night.

(I'm assuming its desert -- I don't even know why I thought that. It just seemed deserty to me, although you can't really see anything to define it's location)

That is an interesting effect. Also interesting is that if you look at the image full size and look at the center of the star wheel it appears to form an infinite cone.

Was this one composite exposure with the Mark III?
Did you have to do much noise reduction? how does it look at 100%
The reason I ask is I own a Mark III and I am waiting for a clear night to do star trail photography up in yellowstone National park. your advice could save me a few hours in the night of trial and error

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to Iamidaho [2008-05-27 21:06:02 +0000 UTC]

This was a single exposure of 25 min. using the FH II-1 Long exposure noise reduction (User’s Manual page 163). I didn’t try Digital Photo Professional for further noise reduction and the noise reduction in CS3 didn’t seem to do much.

thanks I also got your 100% example appreciate your time.
Have you tried noise ninja? does cool things for image noise. Quite excited for some clear skies this week!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to Iamidaho [2008-05-27 21:40:07 +0000 UTC]

I haven't tried NN yet but I may. Do you have CS3? Have you tried other noise reduction software?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Iamidaho In reply to JAHarrell [2008-05-27 22:03:16 +0000 UTC]

I have CS3,
I have not used any other stand alone noise reduction programs.
My favorite Raw tool would be the Canon DPP software, seems to give me good results faster.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JAHarrell In reply to Iamidaho [2008-05-27 22:13:31 +0000 UTC]

I'm coming to the same conclusion about DPP and they keep improving it. The noise reduction in DPP works pretty well.
BTW when I first looked at those VLBA shots I thought that I saw much more noise that there realy was. There are far more stars in the image than one can see. What I thought was noise actually formed arcs and thus were stars not noise. I may try a lower ISO tonight.

Thank you Len
The truth is that the antenna is in the β€œarked” position in both pictures. I really don’t know much and the operation of that facility but I’ve been told that when high winds occur or are forecast they park the antenna to prevent damage. For that picture it was a good thing. When the antenna is in operation it moves every few minutes.
