Description After some helpfull crits I revisited this piece focusing more on the light source. I'll leave the first version of this up on dA for a little while for reference...
Starting with the cross hatching that was at the top of the page, I pushed that into the background by darkening the background layer and making the light source not as prominent in the forground. I also moved the light source layer around and changed the opacity so it shone on his helmet and cape.
I gave his hand a bit more of a contrast too, considering that the light source would be shining directly onto it.
Then I focused on the entire body. The light source is at the top so I made the entire body get darker the further down the piece you travel.
I still need to get away from that soft brush so much, but I'm gettin there. I've gotta find the right balance between using it, and not OVERusing it....
it's a real pain in the ass.
I think I'm gonna do some life art lighting studies under a single light source in a dark room this week to get it down.
I'll post what I come up with...

Again....

Awesome, I'm glad to hear that you'll be doing some intense studying!

I had to do a double check to see if it was me that made that comment about the light source (duh it wasn't lol), because I actually was going to, but I abstained because with comics sometimes it seems like a totally different animal (and this is no slander to comic artists at all, I grew up loving to draw from comics).

During the first year at AI I had gone to the comic shop to try and find some inspiration when I was in a rut, and the one thing I noticed was that a lot of comics ignore light sourcing. I just figured that was par for the course, so I just didn't bring it up with your piece.

Although, now you have it with authority, light is an important part of any piece, that is, if you want to be the best!

Study up Applesauce!

I was suprised to find that ALOT of comic colorist DO ignore light source. But I was also suprised to find out that little details like light sources are what seperate the good colorists from the great ones.

I'll be sure to post what I come up with. I probably won't post the drawings I do this week, but I'll be posting some comic artwork implementing what I learn this week into it.
