Description Oswald's Bay, Lulworth, Dorset.

Although I was out at this same spot last week, today felt very much warmer. The first day that I have been out with my camera that felt as if we have cleared the darkness of winter for another year.

I shot 3 seperate exposures to get the full range of light using a 2 stop soft grad placed at an angle which followed roughly where the wave is breaking. I shot a futher 3 shots with my hand obscuring the sun so as to eliminate flare (I didn't "catch" all of it as you can see).
I processed all 3 exposures and a second sky exposure for the flare removal. I then hand blended them into the resulting image.

I can imagine it would be freezing stood still waiting for the right moment. If its any consolation it is well worth it to get a shot like that.

Yes it will be nice to have some good skys. Having said that, I would have loved to have gotten some good shots with moody skys but we don't really relish the long drive to the coast in bad weather

Oh, the drives part of the fun
I always assumed you were close to the sea, don't know why, Cornwall??

No I'm from Birmingham but my sunsets are off my honeymoon in Cornwall and some of my wild flowers are from there. So for us to go coastal it's at least 2-3 hours as I don't really count Weston Super Mare as having a good coast line

We have a week off end of March so we're hoping to go out one of the days. It's just deciding where to go. I'd like to try and get some good coastal shots and try and catch a sunset depending on the weather. I don't think we will get a holiday again this year. We need to find someone with a cheap caravan for hire

Fantastic capture, I really wish I'd stayed around there for sunset. I actually walked past you a bit earlier, but I had to be in the cove before sunset.

Great image

The guy with the camera set up on a tripod over his shoulder?? Think I nodded or said hi. Might have been more than one Photographer who I saw down there.
Cool, always good to see others on DA out in the field.

Yeah, that was me, you nodded hi. It was nice to see someone else shooting along there, you had a great spot.
It was quite funny actually, I was walking with my dad and he was very confused by your nd grad filter (I've only got circular filters) so I had to explain to him why there was a large 'thing' stuck on the front of your lens.

Cameras do look odd to the untrained eye with big filters on the front. Was a lovely afternoon to be out an about. You from around there? I have a 2 hour drive to get there...

Yes, that's true. It was a fine day, made a nice change from the overwhelmingly grey week or so before. It takes about an hour and a half's drive to get there from me, I'd love to get there more regularly but it's just that bit too far. How often do you make the trip?

JakeSpain In reply to adamlack [2011-03-03 17:14:40 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about the Grey Days....Depressing...
I go to Dorset because it is the closest coast to me which has some photographic appeal. I live in Hampshire near Winchester and feel like there is little in the way of scapes around here to shoot. I suppose I go to Dorset less that 10 times a year but sometimes a week or 2 apart depends really.
You anywhere on my way down? I often go with [link] who was at the end of the bay when you saw me.

adamlack In reply to JakeSpain [2011-03-04 16:22:03 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's a fantastic piece of coastline. I'm down in Chichester (West Sussex), so I'm quite close to the coast, but it's a world away from Dorset. It seems almost exclusively flat beach around here, there's almost nothing in the way of cliffs/hills so it makes a nice change to go somewhere with a bit of height in the landscape. I mean, it's nice, but nothing here really feels in any way 'wild', it's all quite farmed or somehow very man-influenced. Ah, yes, I saw his comment - sounds like he did a similar thing to me!

git. I knew I should of joined you around that area. I have no clue how you kept the sea spray off. My kit got coated after every damn shot facing the same way!

JakeSpain In reply to Neutron2K [2011-02-27 21:30:27 +0000 UTC]

No need for jealousy....That Bay's not going anywhere so plen'ytime t' shoot it....
I was fairly far back from the sea, I was shooting from a height much of the time, I had a cloth over the lens between shots and I kept stopping to polish the filter/lens....

Anyways cheers for the approval.

its a great shot mate. I got a similar one further up the beach after I got hit by that sea lol. But the light wasn't as great as in this piece.

Thanks James, Comp was tough, I tried quite a few framings and eventually found this through trial and error. It still wasn't absolutely right though and I had to crop a little to give it the correct balance. The world is just too small through a view-finder and so I often find my comps need a tweek....

I know what you mean, I think its harder at places like this due to the amount of stones and the choices of which ones to use! Your selection balances really nicely!

I shot this sunrise this morning too, i'll upload my shot later! Thank you for the watch
