Description Finally I managed to get out to do some photography....
We have had so many grey days this winter. Almost all the times which the weather has promised more it has been a workday. Horrible. This was the first promising day for a while and the weather came as a suprise having been forcast as another overcast one. It was a Monday, I phoned in to work and was awarded a days holiday. That was it, batteries charged, lunch packed, car loaded up, me off outta here.

This is on Dorset's Jurrasic Coast and this particular view is one which I have walked past inland many times and therefore missed. It is a super view and I spent most of 2 hours wandering about, sitting on clifftops and taking it in whilst the sun gradually fell to a point at which I could shoot.

I have spent all week attempting to process this. It has been really tricky to achieve it, or at least tricky to work out the best way (or easiest way...) I tried and failed twice and had to come up with a completely different plan. Luckily it worked and I was able to save some time by using one of the masks from the failed attempts to mask the same areas here.
I am not yet sure whether it was all worth it but I have certainly learnt some lessons, primarily to keep going. I am not sure it is perfect yet but I am fairly happy with it.
3 exposures, a frame to remove flare and at least 2 seperate RAW conversions to correct various bits.

Thanks. I would love to get a shot with the focus more on that part of the coastline but without being out on a boat there is no way to achieve it....

Lovely shot, lovely light. Alex is right about the rock in the foreground. Shame you could not get an extra few feet of height. What you need is a tall tripod and a step ladder!

It looks to be a great job to me Jake, obviously there's a learning curve but I cant fault this technically. You must have been taught by a true master

On the more artistic side the composition doesnt quite work for me though. That foreground needs a bit of a rethink even though the rocks themselves are attractive. I'm also not a huge fan of the foreground clipping the horizon. The light is lovely though

Yep, you really have helped. The best thing you taught me is to use my eyes properly. I am still not sure how to get the best out of the darkest exposures for the sun though. I shot a seperate frame for a sunstar which is included here but was so obviously pasted in that I have had to turn the opacity right down. Also to get the sun without any burn is nearly impossibly hence the clipping I have left. And I really need to practice with the actual shots, I took far too many frames to get this, panicking that I hadn't got what I needed...

Comp wise, I know, I know....Tried many different angles, couldn't get any more height without winding the center column out not many possibilities what with the end of the cliff and all....
I am thinking about returning tomorrow, we'll see....
