History:

Jessa was raised on an island created by an old alliance between two witches that shaped a way of life for all the inhabitants. Children of one witch clan were born and paired with another kid of the other being and brought up on the idea that they would help each other reach their full potential in terms of magic, as well as the shifters being written off as familiars or guardians for the more common spell casters. After being selected by some sketchy ritual, the two would seal their bond and be paired as guardians for one another until death.

A girl named Hazel was chosen as Jessa's witch, they grew close very quickly and became nearly inseparable. As soon as she learned the trick to transforming into her 'bear form' Jessa would almost always be stumbling around as a little cub, doing whatever Hazel needed whether it be stealing some ingredients to a potion or scarring off a few troublesome boys. Hazel was ecstatic to learn her familiar was a bear, and used that to her full advantage. Ignoring the elders warnings that those matched with a large predator always had a slim chance of losing control of them, Hazel would smile along and tell Jessa they'd go on great adventures soon enough. As they got older both agreed to skipping lessons and ignored scolding from the older witches, quickly setting off on Hazel's promised 'adventure'.

Hazel took each town they came across by storm; Jessa helping when it came to protecting the witch from the enemies she made, and maybe swiping money from someones pockets once or...twice. It did come to a point though where the witches of each town* were starting to take notice of these little vigilantes (as Hazel had deemed herself and her familiar) destructive path through their territories.

By the time the two had hit Opal's town, the experienced witch had already been informed well in advance of the duo, she already had a plan to get rid of them quickly should they start any trouble. Which of course... they did. The older witch met the girls head on with a deceivingly nice little get together, that turned sour very quickly. (AND MAYBE JESSA WILL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT IT IF YOU RP WITH HER B)c EHEHE)

It wasn't long, maybe two or three days after the exchange Jessa was waking up the next morning covered in the blood of the only person she was promised to protect.
Confused, panicked and heart-broken she quickly made leave of the town, running to disappear as fast as she could. It felt like she had betrayed Hazel, put a bad name to everyone back home and even the other familiars...
She was supposed to protect her, but instead was the one who murdered the witch.

Something was wrong with her, she didn't remember turning. She didn't remember anything from that night, and as she wandered she came to the discovery of realizing she could no longer willing switch between her forms. It took a few run ins with some unfriendly travelers on the road until she realized that anger was the only thing she could remember before that chunk of time was lost to her. Seeing this as her losing part of herself Jessa decided reluctantly that it was time to head back to the island and seek help. On her travels though, and thanks to one stranger giving her wayward directions she came across a rather ... strange looking mansion. Suddenly the thought of prolonging facing the inevitable anger from the witches seemed like a much better idea.
AND WAH LA.

Now, at Hiems she stays low understanding and fully believing that she may be losing herself to her own anger, but at least here she knew no one was hunting for her, right?

* In Hazel & Jessa's 'dimension' it's common to come across witches who stake claim to a town, some hide it and live peacefully among the humans & creatures, while others embrace it. In Opal's example, she's considered a strong witch and disposes of others in fear they have come to kill her to take her territory.

(A curse placed on the bear by another former witch from her and Hazel's island. Opal had no ill will to Jessa she was just the collateral damage in a feud between two witches.)
-The only benefits is it acts as a sort of 'buff' to her previous powers, only for negative reasons though.
-Increases the effect of her inner anger, and lets it consume her further. FUN TIMES. ALSO MAKES HER GO BEAR BUT IN BAD WAYS.
-Makes her unable to transform at will even outside the mansion (has to be provoked by a strong emotion; most commonly anger)
-Temporarily wipes out her memory, as well as when she wake sup will have no recognition of what may have happened.
-The healing process between shifting forms is lost (ie: Jessa's ear scar shouldn't be a thing).
