Description This is a very, very basic "how to make scales" tutorial for generic overlapping scales.  Keep in mind that most creatures don't actually have scales like this, but they seem to be common in art.  But this will give you a kind of idea of how individual scales can be made and painted in a simpler manner, which should hopefully help springboard fledgling artists to learning more advanced techniques.

Awesome tutorial! 

I especially like the idea of doing basically a grid over the shape of the body then rounding out the scales. That was the part I was having trouble on, so thank you for pointing that out! Your scales look absolutely lovely, btw.

This is helpful, I am making an animal in sketch as an experiment and it has scales.  This tutorial is a great help.

I imagine feathers might start out similarly, then just add a featherlike texture when you start polishing.

I can see that you are putting a lot of efforts into your post. Keep posting the good work. Some really helpful information in there. Nice to see your creativity.
