BEGINNING -> NEXT CHAPTER ~
Ardril Kaeire was part of the newest generation of the mighty Kaeire bloodline. She was the older sister of one brother, named Glail Kaeire, and represented with him the hope and future of the high elves. Like their species, both were really noble and seemingly enjoyed their place in the secured valley with no outside threats. Some even went so far to say that Kaeire's bloodline created high elves long ago, and thus it was respected even among other high elf families. Ardril didn't care whether this was true or not, she enjoyed her life with no real responsibilities and kept getting into trouble with Glail. She was always been interested from swordfighting, which was not proper occupation for a lady, according to her father. Nevertheless, she kept practising every week and even went so far to take Glail into her hobby. Whenever maids wanted to dress her up for some fancy occasion, Glail helped his sister to escape through window and off to the woods. They were inseparable pair and went so far to call each other spoiled little brats. Their life was perfect.
When Ardril turned 20, their land was visited by another high elf family. She observed the prince, who clearly was interested from her. He kept bowing before her and kissed her hand a little too enthusiastic for her taste. Ardril frowned and pulled her hand back, wiping it on her dress when no-one was looking.
''Dear sweet Kaeire, for your birthday I've decided to bring you a gift. With the permission of your father, I picked the best one that there was and trained it for you'', the prince declared and gave a sign, so his servants pulled the veil off from the huge crate. It revealed a cage with huge animal inside of it. Ardril's eyes widened, when she met pair of dirty orange eyes on a huge ram-horned head.
''Prairie kukuris are not that common yet, so this was very hard to find. It still has some kind of raw beauty in it'', the prince continued, ''Just like you, Kaeire.''
''So you're saying I'm raw savage who deserved to be in cage?'' Ardril asked, turning her eyes from the creature to another high elf. The prince jumped and turned pale, starting to stutter in his words.
''No! I mean, you're both beauties! Not in savage way, not at all... You took it all wrong...'', he whispered his last words but Ardril had sharp ears.
''Maybe you should've been more specific with your words then'', she snorted and turned her head, watching the prairie behind bars. It had dark, black and crimson coat with stricking pearl white stripes across it's neck and back. The white created almost skull-like pattern on prairie's head and it had curving, long ram horns and small ears. Ardril was able to see long fangs sticking out from its mouth. The animal looked very muscular under its short fur; it reeked power and it made Ardril somewhat interested from it. Even if she had been snappy to the prince, she secrectly liked his gift very much. The woman had always wanted a mount, and it was especially important to high elves to be able to look down to others. Prairie was tallest known mount right now and they were indeed rare. Ardril didn't knew she wanted a feathered kukuri, but now it was clear that her love for them was born.
''I'll accept your gift'', Ardril declared and the prince looked surprised. He smiled, letting out a relieved sigh and joined Ardril and her family when they leaded the visitors to the dinner. The prairie sat in her cage and watched after them, before starting to observe her surroundings. Golden trees were singing in the wind and air was full of sweet scents from the fruits they were carrying. The animal closed her eyes and let it all in through her nose, letting out a soft murmur.
When morning dawned in the valley, Ardril ran towards the stables excited. She wanted to see how her prairie liked her new surroundings and wanted to take care of it. She believed that spending time with the animal made their bond stronger, despite what her father always said of the animals.
''Let the servants take care of them. When it comes to riding, they will obey if they're trained'', he kept saying. Ardril let her golden hair flow in the wind when she skipped couple stones on the way down to stables and opened large wooden doors. The staff looked surprised, seeing her in there.
''Good morning, Kaeire, is it time for riding?'' one of them asked.
''I want to see the prairie and take it outside'', Ardril explained briefly, ''Did you feed it already?''
''Of course, we feed them all during wee hours.''
''Well, from now on, I want to feed her. I'll take care of everything she needs'', the high elf declared and approached the pen of the animal. Prairie was keeping her head high up and looked around curiously. She licked her lips and Ardril got another glimpse of the pearl white teeth.
''Hello there, lovely'', she said. The animal took a quick look down, before lifting her chin. It didn't move when Ardril opened the door and entered the pen. Some might say it was foolish to approach such a big animal so fearlessly, but Ardril trusted the prince who had claimed the prairie being trained.
''I hope you like your surroundings'', the high elf spoke softly and tried to meet eyes with the animal. The prairie though kept her head high and followed the life of stables rather than small elf in her feet. Ardril wasn't discouraged by this though. She looked at the food bowl that was licked clean and water bucket was still half full.
''I guess it's time for you to go outside then'', she said and started to dress the halter on the prairie. When she dropped her massive head to the high elf, Ardril was able to feel the warm breathe on her arms and chill ran through her body. Prairie reeked elegancy and hidden power, which was almost overwhelming. High elf snapped out from the admiring and started leading the animal. The prairie followed her nicely, large claws scraping against the stone floor on the way out.
Ardril kept visiting the stables almost every day. She tried to wake up early enough to feed the prairie, but she had always been a heavy sleeper; it wasn't easy to change habits right away. She decided to let staff take care of the breakfast and focused on other areas of taking care of the animal. During the next day she named the prairie, and talked to her hoping she would learn to answer to it. The stablemaster hanged the sign on the door of prairie's pen, reading Raju in carved letters. The prairie sniffed the sign once and let it alone. Ardril changed the water of the animal, cleaned its pen when it was outside and took it to the fields almost every day. During rain she sat in the corner of the pen inside and talked to Raju, who still didn't seemed too interested of her. The dove just kept her head high and didn't have an eyecontact with her new handler. Sometimes it frustrated Ardril, and she voiced her concern often to Glail.
''What if it'll never start to like me? How I'm supposed to trust it when it doesn't seem to trust me?'' she whined, laying down on her bed. Glail brushed his chin and looked pondering something. He then smiled and stated:
''You two sure fit to each other. Both are stubborn as mules!'' The high elf let out a laugh that was cut short by pillow Ardril threw at him.
After weeks of work, Ardril was once again cleaning up the pen of Raju while the prairie was outside. From the tiny window she was able to see how prairie trotted to the furthest corner of the pasture and laid down, looking into the horizon. The high elf rolled her eyes and kept swiping the floor. Sweat was dripping from her forehead, but she refused to give up even if staff offered to clean the rest.
''Raju is my prairie and I want to take care of her'', Ardril answered and filled the water bucket. She then fetched food from the storage and put the bowl on the ground, before throwing the broom on the corner of stables and walking outside. Inside was hot, but cool breeze stroked her face as soon as she stepped outside and she embraced it, spreading her arms for a moment. The high elf rubbed her neck and looked to the pasture. Raju was staying alone in one of the fields, divided with high wooden fence to keep kukuris and horses apart from each other. The prairie looked lonely, like always. Ardril had thinking going inside to entertain her brother, but instead she took a nearby sheepskin and started walking towards Raju's pasture. Surrounded by forests, the field had only one large tree growing on top of the hill, providing more shade than a little shack in the corner of the enclosure. After the climbing Ardril laid down the sheepskin and sat on it, leaning against the bark and let the wind wash away her bad mood. She had been frustrated with the cleaning up, with no responce from Raju at all, but now she was breathing calmy and thought:
''I will get her open up. It's no that hard, it will just take some time.''
After an unknown time, Ardril was woken up by the sound of heavy footsteps approaching her from behind. She opened her eyes and turned her head, meeting the pair of dirty orange eyes again.
For a moment Ardril was speechless and little surprised. Raju was staring right into her and didn't turn her head away like she usually did. After weeks of ignoring the prairie seemed suddenly very interested from her handler, who was frozen into place. Ardril tried to collect herself and wiped the surprise off from her face. Instead she turned and dug the folds of her gown, picking up a sucarcube.
''Wanna join me for a treat?'' she asked and offered sugar to Raju. Prairie kept the eyecontact with the handler and her breathing warmed the hand of the high elf, when she picked up the treat with her soft lips. It was a first step; but a big one for Ardril.
