Woah, nice! I've almost read all the culture novels (the last one should come to my local library tomorrow!) And I love it's universe!

Though... GSV Stands for
General
Systems
Vehicle.
Not
General
Service
Vehicle.

Still an awesome sketch though!

It's really hard to choose. But if I had a gun to my head I would probably say Player Of Games. Which one would you choose?

I read the one about a tree, your latest one. I like the waking up from amnesia and I'm very curious to find out who she is and what she was doing in a tree. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the story. And I'm going to read more of your stories.

Ooh that one was good. But my personal favorite is Look To Windward because it spent so much time showing us the day today day lives of culture people. More so than the others.
But my favorite Protagonist is Zakalwe, because of his back story and how it was told throughout Use Of weapons.

Yeah, that one had Sma in it and I really like Zakalwe's story and the end was a bombshell. I never saw it coming. No wonder he was so messed up. I re read Use Of Weapons late last year and I could see Zakalwe's journey through different eyes. Also I Love the contrast between Zakalwe's tortured life and Sma's relatively carefree and Β decadent lifestyle. And her overprotective knife missile wielding drone companion. It was such a joy to visit the culture universe again. I recently re read Surface Detail again. That has some scenes that are etched on my soul for eternity.

Yeah, HE TURNED HER INTO A CHAIR!

and don't forget about the suprise in Surface Details epilog! Vateil being Zakalwe just blew me away! Especially considering that surface detail takes place several centuries later

I'm glad you know about that.. I was curious to know if you had read Surface Detail and whether you knew the surprise at the end. I was afraid to give away any spoilers. I was floored when I read the very end of Surface Detail. I really enjoyed the Ship The Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints and its Avatar. 'Twas really fun to read!

Β She kinda looks a little like a flatworm, trilobite, or slug here. I could see her just slowly chugging along through hyperspace (or whatever passes as FTL in the Culture universe).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesF63 In reply to JESzasz [2016-03-09 01:31:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, she has a very organic form. It's just a personal preference. Sea creatures provide a good template for spacecraft design.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JESzasz In reply to JamesF63 [2016-03-09 15:13:40 +0000 UTC]

Β As someone who admires the organic look of the Galaxy class, I can understand the preference. I think as we become more advanced, and the technological limitations lessen more and more, our design will take on a more and more organic look.

JamesF63 In reply to JESzasz [2016-03-09 15:51:54 +0000 UTC]

I really like the Galaxy class Enterprise too. And I think you're right. The early aircraft designs, for example looked like powered kites, but now they look more like birds. Life has overcome many problems and filled many niches. Life forms are a great source of inspiration for design.

AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh soΒ  that's what one of them looks like.

Saw the man at a talk; he was dynamic, engaging, and wonderful; kind of guy you would gladly want to talk for eons with, next to a roaring fire

Alas no more

Great work sir

Yes, he was a sharp witty and intelligent man with a warm heart and a highly creative mind. It's so sad that there will be no more Culture novels, but at the same time his readers feel grateful and blessed for all the amazing works he left for this and future generations and for the inspiration he provided.
And thanks for your positive feedback. Much appreciated
