Description Another tragic accident near the water. I was setting my camera up on the edge of this breakwater along the Toronto lakeshore when my Singh Ray grad slid out of the holder and into the water. Normally I would just fish it out and dry it off but the water was very deep in that area not to mention very close to the freezing point. All I could do is watch it slowly sink out of sight to it's final resting place at the bottom of Lake Ontario. The worst part about it, is that it was my 3 stop hard grad that I use most often and I will have to do without for a little while.

Oh no! Sorry to hear that you lost your filter in the water. I'm glad you didn't go in after it if the water was freezing.

The photo is gorgeous without the filter, so calming. I love the straight lines of the wall leading the eye through the picture to the more organic shapes of the city skyline.

Thanks. In retrospect I am glad I didn't go in after it as well.

Thank you very much.

WOw, I think I'll never see any sea like that... It's an awesome shot. Correct me if it's not a sea. I'm stupid with these things...

I'm very sorry about what happened to your Singh Ray grad... That's very terrible. I hope you cheer up soon.

Thank you. It's actually a very large lake not the sea.

That though always passes through my mind when I take pictures at the waters edge. Sorry for your loss James. My 3-stop hard is my favorite too followed by my 3-stop reverse.

Ya well I guess it happens sometimes. At least now I have an excuse to get a new one, maybe a reverse grad.

You seriously need to tie off all your gear to yourself with rope...no, wait, you'll fall in yourself then! This is the second or third time right that gear got a bit wet?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JamesHackland In reply to HKDP [2007-12-02 09:47:35 +0000 UTC]

I have considered tethering myself to my camera because if that goes in I'm screwed. I think it's the third time within the last few months.

You can swim, right??? Be careful!

I know one photographer who, faced with an assignment up on a tower crane, secured his gear with those hyper-sticky anchors points used to attached locks and cables to laptops! He then tied lengths of parachute cord between his safety harness and the anchor loops. I laughed at him…but he explained further…

The crane was only going to stop working long enough for him to climb though the hatch on the turntable. He was out on the boom’s catwalk while the crane was revolving and lifting. He said that, at the tip of the boom, you can get as high as 15 mph horizontally, along with noticeable centrifugal effects, and have as much as a 3 foot vertical deflection vertically depending on the load being lifted. Things one cannot see or feel with feet planted firmly on terra firma.

Suddenly, trying of gear seemed like a real smart idea…

I think I can swim I guess I'll find out next time.

That's a crazy story about the guy on the crane you have to be extremely brave to be able to do something like that.
