Male and female. Fire and water. Light and darkness. Hot and cold. Life and death. Yang and Yin. We're all one-winged creatures bearing some strengths and gifts, and also some weaknesses and shortcomings. We need someone with the wing we're missing to complement us, benefitting from our strengths and covering our weaknesses. In order to fulfill the first of all commandments, one closer to the calling God Himself holds than any other task in mortality, we come together to become one flesh, with two wings, and promise to sacrifice ourselves to each other and for the sake of our children upon the Earth.

That is what I celebrate on Valentine's Day. I don't know or care how or why the holiday became what it is: people oftem blame it on commercialization (as though it were a bad thing), but I think this fundamental constant of all human cultures deserves a day, anyway. Happy Valentine's Day.
