I'm so glad I found this. I had the sudden urge to look up "Sheik Zelda Iron Sheik" and not only did I find this but the man himself make comments about Zelda XD

Well, she always was a girl, otherwise there wouldn't be those feminine screams when she was attacked by Bongo Bongo, she wouldn't cover her face, or wear the bandages in her chest. Of course, the old design was to mislead the player into thinking she was an actual man, leading to an unfortunate big confusion, but this was later rectified in both non canonical (SSBB) and canonical (OoT3D) games to make her look more like the woman in drag that she is.
