Description To put it succinctly and rather bluntly, I've always been dissatisfied with the tricorders in Star Trek. Computer interfaces in the 24th century don't have buttons. PADDs in the 24th century don't have buttons. Why, then, do all the tricorders have to have buttons? By the 25th century, I should hope they'd have gotten it right.
I'm not saying I'm satisfied with this design, but at least it doesn't have buttons. Blinkies are okay, those are always good. Buttons, on the other hand, are primitive. I'd be glad to get rid of them. Besides, LCARS style displays are more innovative and fluid.

I totally agree to captezri. Hardware buttons? What for?!
But nevertheless I've got some constructive (I hope) critique:
1. Your Sensor array at the device's top is glowing? Just imagine you're using this thing infiltrating some dark hideout or something... you wouldn't want that thing glowing then. Same for those lights (if I'm not mistaken) at it's lower end.
2. What color is the tricorder's housing? Is that black? Anthracite? Blue? Violet? The point I'm trying to make is: why not the good old gray? Or a little darker gray.
Whatever. You're doing a dann nice job there! Keep on trekkin'!

It's seven years old, it's junk haha I've tossed it out and moved on a long time ago.

I really like this design! It makes a lot of sense, the physical buttons limit what you can do with a standard tricorder. With yours you are basically making the whole thing reconfigurable to the task at hand. I see nothing wrong with a full touch screen device, as I much prefer my android phone to text with rather than relying on something with actual buttons Very awesome work! Did you make a physical device?

Hah, I wish I could have made a physical version. Maybe someday I might, but I think I'd prefer to try my new phaser design first. At any rate, glad you like it.

Would you care if I attempted to make a physical prop that was similar at some point? I would certainly give credit to you, if you didn't mind.

Thank you!!! You may be interested that Lowes carries one inch hinges (and they seem to be strong enough to hold up under heavy use)that look quite similar to the ones used on the props for 1.97. I will let you know when I manage to start on it

one good things about buttons is that if the screen gets broken than the buttons can still work. So their good for basic and some primary functions. But I guess it depends on how durable the screen is I guess.

I personally like having buttons on personal devices. Touchscreens will never provide your with the same kind of tactile feedback and it's more difficult to memorize a featureless surface than a surface with lots o buttons. But the displays are an enormous improvement over tricorders of the past with their tiny little screens.

JamieTakahashi In reply to TheEvilCoiffio [2008-03-19 00:03:52 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's funny that you should say that. In the Star Trek Voyager episode "The Year of Hell", Tuvok lost his sight in an explosion and, now don't ask me how this works, the computer was able to engage a tactile feedback display mode so he didn't have to see what buttons he was pressing in order to know what was going on. I'm going to use the excuse that this tricorder can do the same. It is possible that a miniature force field generator such as those in the holodeck creates almost a Braille like pattern overlaid on the display.

You are 100% right! I'm wondering how many other people out there dislike the Tricorders we see. It must be a lot because I have already seen a few designs on DA that say the same thing... I certainly do as well, and made my own design too (although, it has a few buttons ).
Awesome design!

Well, nice piece of work... these buttons always annoyed me, but if I remember correctly, in Voyager they hat this tricorder from the 29th century... it still hat buttons

Heh, I know what you mean. And yeah, the 29th century tricorder from Relativity did still have buttons, but I don't care. They were just stupid. I like it my way better XD

I totally agree... seriously my phone has buttons sortof... but my friend has an I phone, my wife has a touch screen Treo... touch screen seems to be fully the next step in the 21st century... I should expect a couple of centuries would have much better tech...

I like my Katana phone... it's very thin (actually the newest version of the Razor is as thin...) unfortunately, I don't currently have service on it as I'm frackin poor

JamieTakahashi In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-04 22:46:30 +0000 UTC]

XD luckily I don't have to worry about that for another four, five years. Then again, my girlfriend and I are planning on five kids and two dogs, so that'll be interesting

SiathLinux In reply to JamieTakahashi [2008-03-04 22:52:57 +0000 UTC]

5 kids... yeah, you should rethink that .... my kids cost me 1/2 my check per month (and realize that they live at home - as in I've been married only once and am still married to her... )

JamieTakahashi In reply to SiathLinux [2008-03-04 23:18:18 +0000 UTC]

Well, we've still got about four, five years to think about it, but you do make a good point, kids are expensive.
