Description So here is the finished dress. The title 'It's so pretty' is a reference to the only words that came out of my nieces mouth last week when she tried on the first Regency style dress I made. From being a noisy 13 yr old with a non-stop voice she became a tiny quiet young lady and repeated the words 'It's pretty, it's so pretty' - completely lost for any other words.

Worn over a plain white cotton slip, this dress is made from a very lightweight silk. The pattern is that of an original evening dress dating to 1816-19 but with different finishing detail. The original had a plethera of silk net, this dress has padded rouleau loops, which was popular decoration at the time. The bottom of the sleeves and the bodice are finished with padded rouleau loops, the hem is finished with padded tucks in imitation of the rouleau loop decoration and the rope detail round the neckline is another padded rouleau loop twisted and sewn in place by hand.

The back of the skirt is gathered with tiny cartridge pleats, the front is completely plain. The skirt of the original dress was four panels wide, the width of the panels was quite narrow, probably the width of the silk fabric used to make the dress. In the early 19th century silk was often available in narrow widths of between 18" and 27" (45 - 67 cm). I decided not to cut the silk that was provided so the skirt of this dress is slightly fuller than the original as I used two widths of 45" (115cm) silk in the skirt so this skirt has approximately 10" (25cm) more fabric than the original.

choose some nice light fabric, cotton or silk, something floaty. It uses a lot less fabric than you'd think, all the gathers are at the back. Make the bodice very fitted and if you want it to be historically accurate the style is worn wide on the shoulders.
In the Regency period dresses were often made of sheer transparent fabrics and worn over sleeveless petticoats to preserve modesty. Only the bodice and sleeves were gernerally lined.
Good luck

I have to say, the twist at the neckline is just beautiful, it brings a "simple" design a whole new level of beautiful.

If I got to wear something like this at 13, I'd be lost for words, too

Thank you. A detail spotted on another period dress by my commissioner, all I did was check it out and do the work

And the 13 yr old didn't get to try this dress on, she was wearing this [link]

There's no way I would trust a customer commission to any 13 yr old - no matter how perfectly behaved and freshly bathed she was!

Oh, see, I thought you made it for her ~ you'd be the nicest person ever to do that I like the one she's wearing, though ~ I wouldn't be able to wear the color, but man... very pretty (both the cream of her dress, and the green of this one. I couldn't wear either!)

Well she'll be having a prom the year after next...

I know what you mean - not my choices of colours but white/ivory/cream was very fashionable then as were all pastel shades. I think this will suit my customer very well.

Thank you, I have asked for photo's for my personal collection - depending on what they're like and whether she gives me permission to publish you may get to see the dress on the person it was made for

I really don't remember what Wendy's dress looked like I just googled it and yes, it is similar, but the halloween costumes are NOTHING like it!

Do you want to know what she said when I showed her the picture? I don't think I need to say but...
'It's so pretty'

Sadly for her it won't be here for dress up as it's a customer order. I could make her something similar though

yeah well it was customer privded silk and not bought from round here so even if she was here I wouldn't let her try it on in case someone dropped a glass of red wine standing at the side of her

Well I was hoping for the former but telling someone you're busy or about to log off every time they say hello just 'cause you're not in the mood for a chat seems harsh.

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to chasingrainbows [2009-06-05 16:15:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. It's exactly the same base pattern as the other Regency dresses I've made to date - I don't know why but it seems to be a very popular style.

kyusai [2009-06-05 14:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Stunning as always, that neckline is amazing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Janes-Wardrobe In reply to kyusai [2009-06-05 15:09:27 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. The detail on the neckline is inspired by the dress in this [link] My customer sent me the link to show an embellishment she liked the look of and the hem detail comes from a photo in 'Nineteenth Century Fashion in Detail'.

What I've done isn't the same as this lady or the original but is still done in the spirit of the era. I didn't use carded fleece for the stuffing - I could have but the time it would have taken would have put the cost of the dress out of reach of my clients budget. The compromise was to use piping cord - not exactly the same but the look is similar.
