Love these two just sitting at a table chatting while Jane absently sketches out ideas which will revolutionise the Laws of Physics. Plus, you managed to include Darcy's beloved IPod, although maybe that's just because Coulson hasn't shown up yet? Plus, it's actually cool in the desert in the morning, so they're wrapped up against it...

Hee.

Keep up the good work. Also, I'd love to see Darcy and Sif come face-to-face while Jane tries to suck Thor's lips off in the background, perhaps...?

Femmance? How about Shemance?

I have yet to watch more than 20min of Thor because Thor himself made me want to punch him in the face so hard for being... well... Thor. However having read this I will have to sit down and have another go at it.

If you haven't seen "The secret life of bees" (not a action film) it's a beautiful movie full of femmance.

janey-jane In reply to melanippos [2015-05-30 03:56:18 +0000 UTC]

Okay i have officially added 'the secret life of bees' to my watchlist!

So Thor is like a golden retriever. Not stupid, but very simple in the "hungry:eat. Happy:smile. confused: hit it with a hammer" kind of way. I find him very endearing, but i can definitely see how he would be infuriating and exasperating. If i knew him IRL i'm not sure if i would like him - but when i only have to watch him for a couple of hours i kind of love him.

I have a friend (who I'm pestering to put stuff up on tumblr) who does great Loki fansketches you'd probably enjoy : jac-soleil.tumblr.com . I'm going to harass her to put up the one of Thor giving Loki a sack of cats tonight.Β

I'd actually really like to see her have an interaction with Loki, because that would be fantastic.

You know, I saw that picture shortly after you published it (because, you know, I've been stalking you from waaaay back) and it had been out shortly after I saw thor. And Imagine my flailing when I noted that I wasn't the only one who had a feminist-vibe going on watching Jane and Darcy in that movie. I had never even heard of the Bechdel-thing before you liked that article, so I was completly and madly giggling. And it makes me want to write tons of Darcy/Jane-friendship stories, too. I love them for turning Jane from a nurse in the comics to a really brilliant scientist who doesn't have to be stereotypical in it either. Jane gets excited over her work, she strans her ground without being ridiculously hardass - and she is a girl enough to be swooned by Thor's boyish charms. (Which might not be the most logical thing to do, but - come on, how exactly is love logical anyway?).

And I seriously think that nothing and no-one could have better expressed why i love the movie than you and this picture. I don't even really have enough words to express it. (And I kind of really wish now that the second movie will be good enough to inspire you to draw more thor!fanart (andpossiblylokiprettyplese?)) If I ever get around writing fanfiction for thor and about Darcy and Jane, I will link-bomb anyone to this picture, rest assured. It is brilliant. It feels so real, I can immagine this to be a canon-scene. I especially love the details, the clutter on the tish, the poptard, the coffee, the i-pod - mixed with the scietific stuff.

As for bromance - I kind of like the term scrubs uses for it: guylove. And girllove isn't that hard to say either. But I agree with you that Homance is not a term that should be used. Beh.

janey-jane In reply to a-neverending [2013-11-05 05:47:46 +0000 UTC]

I loved Darcy the first time through because she's the kind of person that I WISH I were - snarky and sarcastic and funny. Jane had to grow on me (probably because she's a lot like I am - high strung, demanding, and a little neurotic), but I appreciated having such different and realistic portrayals of women (Sif and Frigga too, to be honest - all four women are given remarkable character depth, regardless of how little screentime they have - and they all feel very 'real' and very strong in themselves). I kind of rolled my eyes the first time I saw it - that Jane fell for Thor so quickly (its what, like 3 days?) - but then on further watching, like you, I saw it as charming instead. Because that happens sometimes right? Who says a brilliant, perfectionist scientist couldn't get swept of her feet in a mad whirlwind romance? (and... I mean if the dude looked like that.... I can't say it wouldn't happen to me...) What, does she have to be 100% pragmatic and heartless to be believable as a scientist?

Darcy and Jane in particular though - I love how the fandom has latched onto them and really expanded on their relationship. I think it says a lot about how hungry women are to see that sort of relationship portrayed; so frequently we just get the whiny romantically desperate friends bitching about their love lives, or the bitchy backstabbing frenemies, or some variation of thereof. Even when you get a female character with depth and interest, they're usually foiled against a slew of female stereotypes - they are being set apart as 'this girl is not like all those other GIRL girls'. It's rare that you get those epic friendships that define a lot of really popular media and spawn countless interpretations and variations (Sherlock & Watson are a great example, Kirk Spock & McCoy are another, really actually, every super popular fandom has examples of extremely strong, profound male-male, or - more rarely - male-female friendship; very few have any female-female friendship at all, and even fewer have well-developed female-female friendship.

I have my fingers crossed for the second movie, I actually had a set of 3 or so variations on this theme I wanted to do (and I only ever got around to this one, so maybe the new film will kick my butt into gear) - and YES LOKI. I kind of can't believe I haven't done any finished pieces with Loki yet because, holy crap I love that character. I mean, beside the fact that Tom Hiddleston appears to be a 100% A+ human being (AKA EPIC LIFE RUINER) he really brings an incredible amount of empathy and compassion to his reading of Loki and does an exceptional job of making us love a character who is, really, a misogynistic, bigoted, megalomaniacal, mass-murdering dickwad. Interesting villains are sympathetic. Non-sympathetic villains are BORING. I wrote an entire term paper on Shylock once and my classmates all thought I was NUTS, but man... i love me a sympathetic antagonist. It makes things so deliciously complicated. I think maybe I haven't gotten to it because I have a hard time pinning down exactly how I'd like to portray him? He's a slippery one....

a-neverending In reply to janey-jane [2013-11-07 07:55:28 +0000 UTC]

Darcy is an utterly loveable character because she (and Jane, likewise) have something very real to it. She really does seem like a college student who might not be entirely thrilled about what she's doing and values her i-pod above anything else. I loved that I could imagine someone like Darcy at our university and she wouldn't stand out incredibly much, because she was so realistic. And, of cause, her snarky side and her dry humour make her a character that I personally love to watch and read about. Jane is also a typical work-a-holic, but what made her especially charming to me was her enthusiasm and love what what she does. Its somewhat of a common thing that people in reallife (and in movies) like to complain about their work, but Jane is invested and believes in it, it means alot to her. I think I kind of liked her portrayal more than the character itself, though. The normal clothing and the thing that while she is a scientist with all she has, she isn't stereoytped with glasses, completly bonkers and socially inept. She laughed, she knew how to deal with darcy, she was kind of adventerous and she was willing to believe in things that are even beyond science ("Before science fact comes science fiction", or whatever she says in the movie. I love that.) And, well. The science facts layd out before her (*caugh* Thors striking appearance *caughs*) are quite enough for her to be somewhat smitten. The circumstances were pretty exceptional and the whole three days were a kind of 'now-or-never'-scenario. (But, I could go on and on talking about Jane and all the things I want for her in future movies (as in: I demand her involvement in the Avengers, because her and black widow should bond and I want a lab scene with her, Tony and Bruce. There, I said it.)) Sif was stressed to be a strong and exceptional woman from the first minute and I think that she was portrayed quite well, too. When they go to Jotunheim to fight, Sif is just as strong as the other guys, she is does not safed. She is also fierce and fiercely loyal, which are admirable traits. The only thing I worry about is that I had a feeling that they are hinting at her having feelings for Thor in the first movie and also in the trailers for the second. I hope it won't be that way. I'd rather have her bond with Jane then her bitchfighting over a man. And Frigga! One has to love that woman. She accepted the kid of the enemy her husband brought home without a blink (from what we've seen) as her own, and she never sways in it. She seems like the woman who takes no nonsense and is the backbone of her family (and the kingdom of asgard, I'd like to think). She stays calm through it all, she trusts, and she loves. And the way she loves and supports is a whole power of its own. (I have feels for that woman, I have to admit it.)

I have a soft sport for strong friendships in movies in general, be that two women or two guys, but the former is really rare in comparisson. I think I almost always get more attached to movies and series' that have a strong friendship portrayed. (I mean, I'm ridiculously attached to scrubs because of the friendship thing. And don't get me started on Watson and Sherlock! The dynamics!) I almost have nothing else to say on that matter except applaud to what you said and 'Where can I sign that statement?'. I also have to say that this is one of the rare cases where fandom picked two characters and created something wonderful instead of pairing wars. I'd love it if their dynamics and their attachement to each other (that wasn't admittedly tooooo deep in the first movie) would become a real thing in Thor 2. Expand on the girl-power Especially, of cause, because I think that Whedon is perfect for doing that. He always creates strong female character (and strong in various different ways) and I would really want him to go even further. Its all a bubble of feels in my stomach right now, because I had a somewhat similar conversation with =astarayel on Whedon, strong women and marvel-/dc-females and I always end up insanely happy when someone else shares my love for strong female characters. (On that note, if you two don't know each other yet, I think you would get along fabulously. Not only because you two are amazing, mind-blowing artists (with different styles, though), but because of the keen eye for details and characters you two both often express in your art and your artist comments. Just... saying. My mind wanders.)

Oh, then I'll cross my fingers for a butt kicking second movie, too. There can never be enough of friendship-art. Or of your art, for that matter. And I have to say that I couldn't believe it either xD No, just joking, you probably have a lot on your plate. But I always thought that you have a thing for confliced characters based on what you draw (and also - super good looking grey-scale-characters). Tom Hiddleston acts amazing as Loki and he has an incredibe voice that I always swoon over. Istartes watched interviews ith him (something I rarely do) because of his voice and stayed for the clever things he has to say. And his laugh - how can one not laugh when he starts to laugh? Not to mention that yes, he just looks stunning. *caugh* (I'vebeentoldthereisatumblrdedicatedtohiscrotch?!) *caugh* I admit that I had mixed feelings about Thor as a movie and the character Loki in the beginning, because I'm somewhat of a mythology-and-folklore-fangirl and I was worried what they would make of the gods. But I like their interpretation of Loki. He is a character that can be confusing, conflicted and also kind of sad. He is all othe things you mentioned and probably even worse on some parts, put non the less did you get to see his point; and a villian with a point is always something one has to love. I can't help but to feel for the little boy that grew up to be such a destoyed and destructive person. I really wonder though what is going on with him in Thor 2. On the whole, I agree with you again. Interesting 'villians' or just dark characters are more difficult to produce but so much more intruiging. The whole story about Hannibal Lector is the perfect examplke for that. (Also: I would loooove to read that terp paper on Shylock D But on that note, I can see your point entirely. He is a character with many sides and to pick one above the other is damn hard. And to not put pressure on you: Whatever you do will absolutely be awesome; of that I have no doubt

I wish I had the patience to go through this and respond line by line, but I'll just say YES.

And I'll only add that Tom Hiddleston is a life ruiner, not because he's a super hottie, but because he give me unrealistic expectations of what men should be like.

Haha, no worries. I talk/write/rant too much, so I never expect anyone to beat themself to reply to everything. I feel a bit guilty over my rant up there a bit. And you had to read it all. Oh dear.

Unrealistic expectations of men. Oh yes. I get them from just about everywhere. Sailor Moon gave me unrealistic expectations of friendhips and men. Inu Yasha gave me unrealistic expectations for what I want my life to be like. All the movies with Ryan Gosling gave me unrealistic expectations of men. And yeah, I agree that people who act nice in interviews _all the time_ ( ) can be especially hard on poor souls like us. We're the media-manipulated generation, forced into an unhappiness of grand expectations to outbalance the generall pessimism of society. Β
