I want to make an accent for one of my dragons on flight rising. He's supposed to have scars on his wings, but his wings aren't like...human-skin color. (here he isΒ flightrising.com/main.php?p=la… ). What I want to know is...what colors should I use? I would like to do number 3, and I assume I would still use the reddish color (cause blood), but what about the rest of it? Just try to match the color of his wings?

Janiko-neko-chan In reply to ClaycraftDecor [2016-01-13 16:37:44 +0000 UTC]

that is nice spiral dragon SpiralΒ  and imperial are my favorite.
I guess with dragon skin there is not much need of reddish color... and it's not some albino dragon with no pigment.
Now depends how experienced you are with photoshop, I wouldn't bother with colors, just add two layers . one set to multiple and use grey or dark greyΒ  to darken parts of scar that are in shade and second layer with overlay setting probablyΒ  and use gray or light grey to lighten parts that are alighted.Β  now I dunno if these accents support transparency

ClaycraftDecor In reply to Janiko-neko-chan [2016-01-13 20:14:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure they support transparency as I've seen some accents for the festivals are translucent in some places to allow the colors of the dragon to show underneath it. Although I don't think the effect of multiply and overlay are carried over in the accent. I haven't used multiply much lately (or...drawn much at all lately), but I think it only shows up when there is color in a layer underneath it, correct? I don't think that would work with an accent...well, it doesn't matter. I understand what you're trying to tell me, so I'll figure out exactly how accents work and then make it. Thanks for the advice, though!

I see then if you are that familiar with photoshop and such.. I will tell you what I would try...I would use original image of dragon. then made those two layers for shading and highlights as I wrote already..and then I would duplicate those layers and merge duplicates and thenΒ  use select tool ....probably select empty space around and use inverse selection..this way I would get total surface I edited at two easy steps. I would keep that selection activeΒ  and moved to layer with original picture and I would copy and paste only those spots I really shaded... then I can delete layer with original pictureΒ  and save as formate which support transparency ( *.png...) but it's only theory I didn't try it

Ya. I found the blur part a little hard but I think blur in Gimp might be different to Photoshop and Sai. It sort of smudges like a dirty finger rather than a smooth blend. Still, this is the BEST scar tutorial on the web. It's really helping me understand the process.

I was kinda trying describe my thought proces when i make it ... Sort of yeah.. What i liked in gimp was this one blur or smear tool. To make picture like someone is on trip... Everything has doubled edge.

Wow, this is a great tutorial! It's helped me lots and I love the 4th kind of scar, but I don't get how you make it look crabbish? Can you explain please? XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Janiko-neko-chan In reply to xZigZag [2013-07-12 14:06:32 +0000 UTC]

hh good I am glad it helped
well I guess itn's no neccesary do ti that way just noted that it migh look more natural sometimes body don't heal evenly ( now you migh press download to view full size image and ti migh eb more visible) I guess when you choose some more special brush whihc ahs some texture and don't cover evenly you can manage make edge of that scar not that smooth .. or maybe take some smaller brush and draw it with a bit shaky hand. but jsut at some places when strokes are too visible you can take blur a blur it a bit often depends what density of brush you set.

i love the design for the 4th kinds of scars, ive been trying this for a while but i just dont seem to get it. although your tutoral is really good, i dont understand the steps >_< im sorry.. but could you explain them to me a bit more?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Janiko-neko-chan In reply to ZankJra [2013-04-24 10:55:38 +0000 UTC]

I see I will try to explain but not sure if it will fit to more anime and manga style
4th scar supppose to be deeper where tissue- closing wound didn't raise up above skin but edges of scar are still swelled and bit higher.. (drawing scar needs bit or medicine thinking too ) also depends how much is scar already healed
when creating such scar think how was this scar made with stabing.. cuting.. burning .corroding.. and more gore stuff
also depedns on your drawing habits

before drawing edges of scar is better with some grey shade draw line for scar remebering shape of body .. it will help also feeling that scar is part of skin. if you making outline for scar is better to use thinner line or maaybe bit fracted line it shoudl help same way -to fade scar into skin.
with shading it self depends if you plan some dramatic lighting or not really
you can make scin aroudn scar bit more pink also depedns if it's on tanned skin.. new tissue covering wound is always less tanned ..unless it'S his natural color this color should fade to other skin and shouldn't be much darker then you shade inside part of scar with darker color... in case I woudl have scar outlined I woudl now take whiel color and made while line out of lines of scar adn sligly fade it to sides.. you can erase bit of while if it'S too much..
and some parts inside scar cen be bit darker... scar isn't usualy healed evenly
when you have have some dramatic lighting and scar is bigger and you want make it look going into the skin and not above
think about it like if it's walley or hill and skin is arth surface it will define which side of scar is darker and which lighter..
if it'S not this case and you need some more simple looking wound
generaly.. wound generaly will be darker and more pink
if scar goes into skin is darker in middle and lighter on edges and if goes above skin.. top is lighter and sides are more darker to set this off
not sure if I helped you...

nope sorry made only this basics...I guess to make some wolf bite right is not easy .. to place teeth marks close enough...woudl need some reserch in medicine maybe .. for pictures of such wounds .....for some ppl really gore I guess
unluckily..didn't have time for even thinking about making more tutorials
