I'm honored that one of my drawings would inspire someone, thank you very much for that, I feel very humbled about it.
I really liked your art style, specially the lighting and shadows, you should try painting on a canvas using the same style, I think the results would be amazing.

Thanks for the compliment.
The key here is patience ... just keep adding details 'til you can't take no more, but before that, Β give it a basic deffinition to the shadows with a cotton or toilet paper ... after defining a little bit of the shadows, start working on the details and stop only when you feel you can't add anything else to your work. Think of it as painting something in Photoshop ... you start with basic lighting and shadow, and then keep adding details. This works with everything: objetcs, people, landscapes, animals. For the shadows, i recomend a very soft pencil (8B is a good choice), just be careful with it since it can mess up your drawing if you don't draw over a piece of clean paper ... your hand is your tool, but if you're not careful drawing with soft pencils, it can be your worst enemy. For the details, you can also use the soft pencils, but you have to be gentle and only use it where it's very dark ... for the details that are located in lighter areas, use a hard pencil such as 2B. And ALWAYS have a clean piece of toilet paper or cotton in your hads to take advantage of the "dirt' the soft pencils create when you use it to spread all over the "shadowy" areas to create a nice gradient.
A woman's face is tricky because it's "cleaner" than a man's ... when you draw a man's face, you can add beard, wrinkles, and a few details (imperfections) to make it look more realistic ... there's room for errors ... but a woman's face can't have beard and too many wrinkles, so the key is her look ... you have to work hard on the eyes, that's the tricky part ... you have to get the shape right, the eyelashes and the reflections (this the hardest to achieve in traditional drawings). You can use here the same technique described earlier and you'll be fine.
I hope this helps ... practice is the number one thing you have to keep in mind when drawing ... you already have the gift, now just keep working on it, especially on the details ... no pain, no gain.
Cheers!

Shadowing is a tricky thing on paper ... you don't have the "Ctrl + Z" command in real life to undo a mistake ... that's why it's scary ... but it's also a lot of fun when you start getting the hang of it.
Like i said before: you have the gift of drawing, now all you have to do is practice ... practicing without having the gift is pointless, but this is not your case, so keep working on it and you'll see improvements in no time. Don't be afraid of throwing shadows ... the more you experience with it, the faster you'll learn how to master it.
I don't think i'm qualified to judge or give advices on drawings, since i'm not a professional ... i don't even think i'm good at it, especially after seeing so many epic pieces here on DA, i think i'm just average ... but i'm glad the little bit of knowledge i have was able to help you. After all, drawing is nothing but a hobby, even if one is lucky enough to earn money with it ... we do it because we love art and it's a way of expressing ourselves, that's the main thing you have to keep in mind when learning ... you need to do it for yourself, and for nobody else ... that's the only way to learn and have fun at the same time.
Cheers!

It took me a lot of time to get this drawing the way i wanted to ... she has a lot of details, like the shirt, rocks, hair, expression, and i couldn't make the drawing without all those little details ... i'm glad people liked it.

WAYYY more ... when i start to get stuck with a drawing, i stop for a few days and then go back to it ... it took me several weeks to finish this.

I used to draw on A3 paper and i can't imagine the headaches i would have if i used A2 ... it's very frustrating when you're drawing and feels it's very far from the end of it ... but just take a few days rest and then comeback to the drawing ... you'll see the difference, it's a lot better than rush things ... you'll get the result you want in no time.

Jansen34 In reply to chong-yi [2012-11-03 17:57:44 +0000 UTC]
lol ... i would be glad if some of my drawings took only 2 months to finish ... there are times when i get really frustrated and bored with a drawing i don't touch it for weeks ... patience isn't one of my virtues and nowadays i'm even more impatient since i started practicing digital painting ... and boy, i suck at it ... i'm feeling like a complete idiot.

yeah, when i do digital painting... i always think that i have to finish it within half a day... it makes me become more impatient ==
