Uh, started as a sketch practice, which turned into a background practice, (as if it isn't obvious what inspired that particular background), which became... this?
Don't worry, Derpy. The Great and Powerful Trixie knows exactly where she's going. She's not lost at all...

You know ... this might be a very interesting fanfiction scenario.
I've seen the "pony wakes up stranded on an island / in a jungle / in an artifically contained environment maintained by unseen aliens for unknown purposes .... and then must fend for themselves in the hostile/indifferent environment" setup done a few times.
But stranding a pony on Yoshi's island?
That might make for an intruiging "survival-type" story.
And I'm actually not joking.
Let's say the pony in question never encounters Mario, Bowser or the like - most intelligent life on the island would be a group of yoshis limited in their communication to the simple utterance of their species' name, and even then it takes a while before the pony encounters the friendly dinosaurs. If the whole thing is played with a more "realistic" edge to it, I'm sure that even some of the fluffy-looking, derp-eyed enemies suddenly become a lot more threatening. Doesn't matter if it looks cute, if it wants to eat you, it's a life-or-death situation.
The sheer variety of creatures and climates would make for a great and very indepth setting, which the pony would have to traverse, hoping to find a means to return home. I'm just picturing Twilight(?) searching the ruins of Baby Bowser's castle, half burried under cooled lava, for any scraps of information. Not to mention that any information about the world at large would be from the Royal Koopa family's perspective - she might not necesaarily get the impression that the "Mushroom Kingdom" is friendly.

I'd imagine that a lot of the narrative would be conveyed through describing the alien "candy-esque" landscape. Not sure if I'd be the one to write it, as scenery descriptions are what usually takes me the most time... Then again, in this case one could always go and look at specific levels in the games for inspiration.
It might be interesting to explore some of the implications of "stuck on Yoshi's island" with a certain level of realism.
For one, I'd wager that a lot of the overabundantly available fruit might be practically oversaturated with sugars - which might taste good at first, but I could easily see
Yeah, heh, I imagine this would be a rather unique take on a Mario-crossover, certainly with a different focus then what you usually expect.
...In that regard it reminds me a bit of "Order from Chaos" . It's literally the single "Sonic the Hedgehog"-crossover fic that ever made it onto Equestria Daily, as it is unique in its approach. It's about Doctor Ivo Robotnik seeking retirement.
One, I imagine Pinkie Pie out of all these ponies would feel the most at home. Two, There's a lot of potential for humor with all of the manic enemies and dot-eyed scenery. Yet, if one were to go a different route, it could be a really tension filled tale about trying to escape so many manic enemies. I would also love to see them use specific levels very much.
I just overall adore the idea of putting ponies in old video game settings. If anything, even if no fanfic like this ever gets written, I think I'll still draw more like this in the future.
P.S, I have never actually played Sonic, weird, huh? All my games (almost) have been Nintendo.
