I've never understood why some of the most technological rich races in the galaxy would use melee weapons(sometimes a ranged weapon as a spare) in combat. It makes for an entertaining story, but it gets stupid when one of the less technological races they call "lesser", "primitives" or even "barbarians" tears them to pieces with less technological, but far more destructive weapons than a plasma sword wielding idiot in fancy armor. The "higher" races often speak of arrogance of the young, but true arrogance is shown when the old run head first waving a glowing sword towards an army armed with black powder weapons strong enough to crack a moon in half.

That's all very sensible, but in this setting, there isn't any useful technological range weaponry left, just magic, melee and medieval-era shooting.
