Description I was commissioned to draw any four Muppets in a horror movie scenario. I thought it would be funny to put Gonzo, Floyd, Rowlf and Bunsen Honeydew in John Carpenter’s “The Thing”—a team of scientists are stranded in a bunker in Antarctica with a carnivorous, shape shifting alien. Gonzo was a natural choice for The Thing, since that’s how he’s often described. I toned down the gore, but the concept of Rowlf’s stomach turning into a monstrous mouth and eating Bunsen’s arms off is still intact (unlike Bunsen’s arms). Keep in mind that Muppets got pulled apart and ate one another all the time on The Muppet Show, so this isn’t too far outside their comfort zone.

Ah, that was the first scene I ever saw of the Thing.  I was way too young to see the movie and walked in on it on the TV.  Good times.

This is great. One of my favorite movies and the Muppets. This should be turned into a shirt. Fright-rags.com has already made some Muppet Horror shirts and this would be a perfect fit.

Which brings up an interesting question; if each new mobile entity of the Thing was an independent and competitive creature, then there were probably some epic Thing vs Thing battles off-screen.

BTW the Thing was not really carnivorous, but more like a macro virus.  The cells of everything it touched became infected, and began mutating and replicating into Thing biology.  It didn't "eat" things as much as it corrupted them.

It ate off the Doctor Copper's arms. That's carnivorous in my book.

Carnivorous would imply that something is being eaten; more accurately, I think the scene shows the doctor's arms being bitten off in a defensive reaction to a painful attack (the shock from the defilibrator pads), like a snakebite.  At least, that was my understanding; when the movie first came out I remember arguing with a friend who insisted that the Thing had pinched off the doctor's arms with a pair of claw-like pincers it had grown in the chest cavity.  Since the story is a work of fiction, there's plenty of room for interpretation.

According to Rob Bottin, who created the monster effects for the movie, it's a mouth and it ate the doctor's arms. That's all the evidence I need.

Interesting sidenote: They hired an amputee and put prosthetic arms on him to be bitten off by the mouth. They even put prosthetic makeup on him to make him look like the actor who played the doctor pre-chewed.

I recall that the producers of the movie, Ben Hur, also hired amputees to produce realistic battle scenes in which warriors had their limbs hacked off. I noticed that most of these scenes have been removed from the film during recent re-releases, though.

I remember reading an interview in the 1980s featuring filmmaker John Carpenter; as I recall, he insisted that the film was not "gory," because all the glop was "creature gore" and not "human gore."  Ergo, not really gory.

If this film was redone with the muppets, all the gore should be animated with felt and yarn.

I'm surprised that you used Floyd instead of Beaker, but then Floyd does look more like Kurt Russell.

One of the MUPPET BABIES episodes hinted that Gonzo might be an aardvark, but dodged it somewhat by having him be averse to eating ants. That's as close as they've ever gotten to identifying what he's supposed to be.

I've got to say, Floyd as Kurt Russell is perfect casting.  He looks like he belongs at that base.

I'm not worried about it, Jay, since the gore in this is on par with the Necronomicomics I've seen while thumbing through Rue Morgue at the B&N news stand.  I never figured out what animal Gonzo was supposed to be, and I figured that Henson et. al. wanted it to stay that way.  I figure Beaker is off camera going "Doesn't feel too good when a lab accident happens to YOU, does it?!" in his meep-meep talk.  Great work on the Henson / Carpenter crossover.

Kill it with fire!

I love that movie and for some reason I wish now there was a Muppet version

Gonzo always had somewhat alien like qualities so he fits in real well into this scene
