Description The Nakika inhabit are in the infancy of sentience inhibiting a world with a lower gravity. Here a nakika mother is instructing her brood in cleaning. Adding some play makes it a fun experience for both.

work in progress (still working on the vegetation and overall environment so will update as it progresses) from creature design workshop at phoenix atelier; so big thanks to Alex Ries for all his guidance, suggestions, and critical eye in this piece.

My, but that is a cute bug(?). The way the smaller one resembles a baby chick playing in water helps a lot for me. The colors and the mother using fragile, plant-looking manipulators instead of those crawling legs to handle him (her?it?) as well.

I can't get a grip on their size relative to earth fauna though. The nearby flora suggests, but doesn't tells. Or is that intentional?

Thanks much; I imagine the mother being about the scale of a large dog but I wanted to keep the reference a little vague that way.

Hope you do not many people come up with such interesting aliens, what process did you go through to come up with them?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JaynaPavlin In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2013-12-21 18:48:40 +0000 UTC]

I cant speak for everyone but in this case: come up with an idea first and then a lot of refinement and iteration to get a design that works, relying on references to see how nature has perhaps solved some of the design issues.

Interesting so what animals did you look at for inspiration?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JaynaPavlin In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2013-12-22 08:28:40 +0000 UTC]

quite a few, crustaceans,Β cephalopods like squids and nautilus, phyllidae, and a few others

I'm curious what the basic idea you started from was.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JaynaPavlin In reply to dranorter [2014-02-12 15:30:47 +0000 UTC]

just a few rough sketches; i think it ended up being a refinement of two of them merged together; the basic idea is something that lives under a large canopy of foliage so has camouflaged elements so it blends in a bit with the environment.

I've never seen anyone attempt to turn an insectoid creature into a nurturing parent. I absolutely love it.
