Please do not mistake this petty idea of a lack of female characters in games argument for feminism. Feminism at it's core is the most intelligent philosophy in western civilization. It's a very humanist approach. It attacks the ideas of women not being payed equally in the work force for doing the same amount of work, a lack of representation in our government and fighting domestic violence.

The pay gap is a myth, it's "77 cents to every dollar " thing is taking the aggregate of all pay in every field by women and comparing it to all pay in every field by men. More men are CEOs currently so they'd definitely make more money over all than most women. women, while they make up the majority (by at least 3 to 8 %) of all college graduates barely 1/4th of female graduates go into fields that will net higher salaries such as science. On top of that more men seemingly sacrifice family time to be bread winners while some women are stay at home parents (though the dynamic is changing) and tend to do more family oriented things. This creates a disparity as single men without children or married men trying to make more money will pick up overtime more often and thus a gap is made and that gap ends up being 23 % more due to overtime. Don't believe me? Look into yourself.
Also there's a severe unrepresentative of male victims of domestic violence (hetro, ot gbtq males) with almost no resources that women have and very few feminist being on the side of trying to make that equal.

What the fuck?
I know this isn't your comic, but that last line was uncalled for and just plain rotten. Way to support the asshole who made this.
Then again, the person who drew this was aching to make a strawman feminist character.

I think any women should be upset when half of their designs. =_= Not saying all female designs are sexualized, but majority of female characters are designed in such a way it isn't gratifying as a women. It is just another way society is emphasizing an unrealistic standard of beauty or enforcing the mentality that women are sexual objects. I am a gamer, but I have to say it does frustrate me when I am playing a game and the female character is scantly dressed, big chested and unrealistically skinny. You can have a strong personality or female role, but it undoes the whole concept if they are dressed like street corner prostitutes..It has to do less with feminism and more with respect. It isn't just the game companies that are responsible for this unachievable standard of beauty. :I Again not saying ALL female characters fall under this, but a lot do..

Well, I've always found feminism in industrialized countries laughable, please... feminism is when you're female and are suppressed! You aren't fucking suppressed in America (nor any other first world country)! Fucking morons.

I'd agree, but I have to say, that even if Amaterasu IS female, she's only refered to as 'she' in ONE line of the game, and never again.
Quote from Issun: "Ammy's sensitive about HER flaws!"
Thus, most assume she's a boy, and let's be honest, her design is very androgenous. I love the game, and Ammy's absolutely badass, but she doesn't make a good example because of this reason; one must RESEARCH or pay A LOT of attention to hte lines in game to actually disover Ammy's a girl.

Truth is companies are trying to sell games to men, which make up the larger part of their sales. They couldn't care less about what gender the characters are or how they act, it's all about profit.
I'm not saying it's right, but it's true. It all about the money.

I'd just like to point out that, as of 2010-2011, only about 12% of all degrees awarded in the field of computer science in the US were given to women.
If you want control over video games, get more involved in the field.

Do you want to know why so few women are involved in the field? Because the people who run the system still don't want to hire women. I told someone I wanted to work in the gaming industry, he knew literally nothing about me, and he said that would be impossible because that's a field for men. He didn't know my skills, my connections, my experience, or even my first name for that matter. He just looked at my gender and told me no.
Either way, the people making the product should make what their consumers want and about half of the gaming population is female www.usatoday.com/story/tech/ga… . Think about the new Call of Duty Ghosts, Eric Hirshberg had said that he and the other people working on the game had wanted to add in female characters for a long time. They knew they had a large female audience and did something to keep those consumers even though they themselves aren't female. www.theverge.com/2013/8/15/462…

That's one guy, out of the entire industry. DO you have any skills, connections, or experience? Regardless, so few women are choosing to pursue a career in computer science it's no wonder it's run by men. You must take action and get involved if you want change. It's hard for anyone to get involved in game design. Your best bet is to form an amateur team, create a few games and go from there. If you're skilled, you will be noticed and likely contacted by a larger company. That's how the industry works. It's what everyone has to do. So go out and form a team of women, and change the industry.
Keep in mind, as well, just as women which to represent themselves, men should be able to do the same. The ratio between male-to-female protagonists in video games isn't actually as bad as it could be, considering how few women care to get involved in the industry. Most of the time, I'm sure it's not a matter of sexism-- it's just that the character they have in mind happens to be male. It's okay for males to want to have a male character.
Why does it matter if you have to play as a male, anyway? In the end they're just 3D models with no real sex. I have absolutely no problem playing as a female; it's all the same to me. As well, if we're talking about Call Of Duty, it's also important to note that the majority of soldiers fighting in wars are in fact male. www.cnn.com/2013/01/24/us/mili… Perhaps they simply wished to be realistic.
Claiming everything is sexist is sexist. If you want to change, go make change. The future is in your hands if you're willing to make it happen.

I completely understand, but modern feminism is making that go too far. Next thing you know, you read the papers and women are wanting to be 'more equal' than men. I also understand the gap thing, but people have to be reasonable at some point. What you choose, your choices will reap its outcome. People nowadays are getting first impressions by looks and start assuming from there. Then, you have girls who have low self esteem. Also, coming up with the term stare rape is just wrong.
I say
equal rights = equal fights

Yeah I really do dislike rabid feminists but they're in the minority. I just want to get to an equal stage, not a better than otherwise this whole process will repeat itself. Of course I doubt we'll really get to that point because like they're are still lots of racists even though people say stuff like racism is over.
((oh my god you are great, love you too man))

I always thought Amaterasu was male all the way up until Issun said 'she.' I kinda went, "What." at that point. But whenever I play it on the different skins once beating the game, I always either play Shiranui skin or one of the other male looking dogs.

I can't speak for any other languages, but in the German version Amaterasu was refered to as "she-wolf" and "Mother of us all" right from the begining and throughout the entire game. oo
But I think she has no gender in the japanese version at all, because gods don't need genders to be gods.

Yeah she was, I just never realized that until Issun spoke about her lol
True, but do keep in mind that Okami is a fictional rendering of the Japanese sun god, who does happen to be female, hence a goddess.
