Somehow I missed this page! Damn, I could have had the answer two days ago!
I figured this was going to happen, but it's still brutal to watch. I feel like I never paid much attention to Pax, but the last page, where you can see he's consciously going to make a sacrifice, made me mist up a little. It's brutal and powerful, which I guess makes it the best sort of storytelling.
Poor Pax. I wonder how Marlin is going to take this.
Also, the art is especially amazing in this sequence.

His main role was to be a loyal companion and friend towards Tiff, as shown in the one chapter where he appears in Tiff´s dream
