I always thought it would have been so much better if instead of impaling her, Sephiroth had decapitated her. Then he could have picked up Aeris' head by her ponytail, swung it triumphantly in circles over his head, and then smashed Cloud in the face with it. Later on, Seph could have had even more fun the rest of her body.
