Description Duo Cartoon DiD sketch; Paper & Pencil.

The tables have been turned!

While infiltrating a supposed GI Joe warehouse, The Baroness discovers some stolen chemical weapons. Half in disbelief the Joe's would use such tactics and weapons, she plans to signal in to report her findings. But before she can, a couple sets of strong hands grab her from behind and quickly overpower her, tying her to a chair tightly and cleave gagging her as well. As she struggles to free herself, she notices a strange lithe figure enter the same way she did, and watches as she is also grabbed by the two uniformed and masked figures. As they bring her closer, she's dressed like a court jester! They pull off her mask to reveal a young blonde with fear in her eyes, as she is also tied to a chair next to her.

Harley, on a mission for The Joker, sneaks into a warehouse thought to contain some uncontrollable laugh inducing chemicals. As she very easily sneaks her way in, she sees on the other side of the warehouse bay that a black uniformed woman is tied to a chair. Sensing that something is not right, she turns to retreat, but a coupe of heavily muscled uniformed soldiers with masks grab her. Musing about her costume, they pull off her hood to see her identity, and then bring her over to where the other lady is, and promptly tie her to another chair and gag her with a strip of cloth. The lady is dressed in a black outfit with a snake insignia.

With both helpless, one of the mercenaries attaches a time bomb to a pillar between the two, and after checking that their knots are secure, both depart. Not knowing each other, but sharing a common goal of escaping with their lives, both struggle against their ropes, but they are tied too tightly to wiggle free or have any chance to reach the others' knots. All they can do is watch each other struggle and listen to the beeps every second of the countdown. Will anyone bother to come to their rescue???

Once again, I apologize for the HUGE setup for this sketch, but I felt it was needed as I have put together two bad girls from very different stories in one picture. This was an idea I had a long time ago, but I held out until I had enough skill to pull it off to my liking, and also I didn't have both settled upon. My requirements for this one was for both to be either cute and/or sexy.

Some items to pay attention to:

Harleen Quinzel aka "Harley Quinn": Harley is one of my favorite "bad girls" because she is a cute and sexy gal that, unfortunately, has had her mind twisted by a diabolical evil. Because of that, I always felt that without The Joker in the picture, she could defeat the almost hypnotic obsession with him and fix her life of crime. In Batman: TAS, there is an episode where she tries to do just that, and by the end of the episode, looks like she has the potential to succeed (although later eps didn't continue this idea). In terms of sketching, the Bruce Timm style is not really one that comes easily to me, but I like it a lot. I really stuck to the basics of her form, and then drew her costume (which is a very easy bodysuit). For her head, I hate the way she looks evil in her mask most of the time, so to give her the DiD treatment, it had to come off, which gave me the opportunity to draw her offbeat hairstyle, and show her expression.

Anastasia DeCobray aka "The Baroness": Anyone who watched GI Joe in the 80's will be with me on this pick. The skintight leather, european accent, and glasses...I wondered as a little kid why I wanted to root for her. Like Harley, she is also a tragic story, having a family member killed and then basing a lot of her life on misguided revenge. I also felt that with other outside influences, she could also turn her life around as well. Her style and sketching was the more difficult of the two by far, mainly due to her Cobra battle outfit. Since her glasses vary greatly depending on what series you are looking at, I decided to forego both the original big round lenses, and the Sigma 6 modern small square lenses, and compromise with small ovals. You will notice that I have her tied more tightly, with the idea that she may be physically stronger than Harley.

The Scene: I did a hack job on this. I did the BG last, so all I wanted to accomplish was a device between them (which had to be suspended), and details that would support that. So I went with some cement pillars and the always cheesy but easy cement block wall with aging built in. Sorry I didn't do something more complex.

I have said enough...what do all of you have to say about this?

Ah, the Baroness.

Can anyone guess why I like this picture.

Anyone remember the episode in which Cobraβ„’ was trying to raise funds by starting a television network? (Hmmm, come to think of it, I think they did that every other week.)

Anyway, they drew Baroness in this dress that left little to the imagination. I don't know how they got away with that on a kid's cartoon, but I'm glad they did.

I am pursuing that episode as I type this.

The Baroness? Hubba hubba! She just needs some DiD treatment to come around to the good side of things

NICE!

Whoa now. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Part of the Baroness' whole appeal is that she's incurably evil. She's way to tough for a little flirtation with mortal danger to make her change her stripes.

In the few issues where she was caught be GI Joe, (Devil's Due run.) she's so manipulative , that she's almost turning the Joes. The Baroness is no wimp.

Nice! AND Characterful. The only criticism I can offer is Harley's head and feet look a little too small, a little out of proportion to the rest of her body. Though in the former case, it might be that her neck is just a might too short.

And no need to apologize for the set-up. The more story the better, that's what The Anoraknophobe says.

The feet are likely too small...feet and hands are not my strong points right now. In terms of the neck, I know the Timm style uses somewhat long thin necks for several female characters like Harley, but I left it out because I figured the top of her costume would be billowed out and cover the entire region...I guess I could have draw her head a little higher. Or I suppose she could be hunching her head down a bit in the struggling.

Thanks for the comment.

Yeah, I don't like Harley in her mask. But I got the entire for her to still be in her costume from a Batman: TAS episode that I mentioned above in another comment in which it happened just like that.

I really like how the Baroness looks here, even though she's a bad girl she's still a damsel here. I never really did like Harley too much though in the cartoon, She's way too insane and the Joker, to me, doesn't seem like the guy to put up with someone that "Upstages" him or steals his style.

But wow I still like it, makes me wish I can save them, maybe they be grateful enough to turn from their evil ways! If not... I guess I'll have to tie them back up! At least they wouldn't have to worry about being blown up!

I'm with you. Walk in and tell 'em "I'll save you, but only if you give up your current evil ways." If they try to double cross (likely), tie em back up until they comply!

Thx for the comment, W-S!

This is no fault of yours, but the angle that the wall and pillars are at are somewhat disorienting. My vertigo aside, nice work, comrade.

A match made in heaven!!!

A note about harley though... you should add some diamonds to her face... especially if you plan on coloring it. She always had card suit symbols on her face as I recall.

Great work again

On her bare face? Really? I thought the diamonds were just on her outfit...

Great work/cool idea... hope you do it in color!

I was just thinking of the Baroness the other day, so this is a nice coincidence... I have some old books from the 80's that are like GI JOE Choose-Your-Own-Adventure novels, and in one of them the Baroness gets tied up and gagged quite a bit, so it's not an inconceivable situation.

JC-DiD In reply to Gogol500 [2009-02-01 20:09:48 +0000 UTC]

I think this one will be colored, although I have some other existing ones that I will likely do first, as well as a contest sketch to color.

The bad girls always get the skin-tight leather outfits, but the Baroness has glasses in addition...how can you beat that???

Well, this is very unusual, to say the least..

I've seen "Mad Love", the origin story of Harl, and I have to disagree w/ya on her turning around w/out Mr. J..she was already trouble long before she even met him.

I also felt it seems unlikely anyone could get the drop on the Baroness like that, but I'll let that slide..

Nice pic,BTW...

Like I said, they derailed my appraisal of the situation in Season 4 of Batman: TAS with that "Mad Love" episode.

Some may say that getting snuck up upon in a warehouse while on a covert mission is unbecoming of a "Cobra Intelligence Officer", but I didn't want to do a knockout either.

Thanks for the comment!
