It is interesting how words can be hijacked (for lack of a better term) to come to mean something completely different than their original meaning.Stamplate by , Done using Paint.NET

It stills means happy, albeit archaic, feel free to use it. It can mean stupid, foolish or unimpressive, is this also a case of hijacking? Again feel free to use it to mean that. But keep context in mind. Language does not work on a first come, must stay basis. It is contextual and it evolves.

I think word "gay" became to mean "homosexual man", because homosexual men are mostly happy and cheerful.

Faggot got associated with homosexuality back in the Medieval Period when they would burn witches at the stake. The homosexuals were so vilified and hated that they weren't even worth a bundle of sticks to burn them, so they'd toss them onto the pile of sticks around the witches and burn them.Β

Lots of words change over time. It's just the way things are. I wish people would stop using the word 'gay' and when questioned claiming that it still means 'happy'. It doesn't. The meaning changed, and people need to get with it.

Sorry to reply to a very old comment, but the meaning didn't change. The word just has multiple meanings now and one is more frequently used than the other. Doesn't mean the word can't mean happy anymore.Β
