Description This was painted as a present for a huge Radiohead fan who wasn't able to take any photos at a recent Radiohead concert. I tried to capture the mood & lighting of the concert we'd been to, as well as the angle we were seeing the show from. It's a lot of fun to paint something with lighting so extreme.

This is really well done, but I kind of feel that it doesn't look much like Thom up there. Among other things, I think his jaw line is different and his forehead probably larger. Also, the mike seems to be way to high, not really intercepting Thom's voice. Besides that, this is really cool! I mean, the concert hall looks really good and the lighting is right on. You didn't just throw some hands in there to forge a perspective like some people do. It actually looks as if this is all seen from an audience perspective somewhere in the "pit" seating. That railing and roof support in the upper left corner adds a lot to the feeling of this being a concert hall. You actually went and illustrated all of the beams in accurate relation to each other... gah, that must of taken a while! It looks layered, convincingly accurate, and three dimensional up there. I assume that the orange is a sun-setting sky visible through the lack of hall roofing, yeah? Pretty! You've captured the essence of an intelligent concert beautifully while showing a good understanding of perspective and whatnot. I've never, ever, ever been fortunate enough to go to a Radiohead concert... dammit, never!! You kind of took me to one for a second with this image though.
Wonderful work, and a

cant take my eyes of the lattice work stuff at the top. The orange of the sky and the blue complement very nicely.

Thanks. Painting a band is good, cuz you know their fans are going to be pre-disposed to like the painting.

Cynic mentioned reference, so I'll mention that I do use photo reference for most of my pictures, but I strongly believe in not copying a photo. For example, I'll search the net for a photo of a stage, so that I can see the structure of it. Then I'll take that structure and draw it in whatever angle/lighting I need. I often tweak things for convenience or cuz I'm feeling lazy, too. For this painting, I used reference of a stage from some benefit concert, a flood light from a theatre website, and a photo of Thom Yorke's face from some music magazine.

I love the lighting on this. The way it falls on the the hands is great. Especially the smoke really adds to this scenario. A very atmospheric piece.

Excellent. My favorite among the paintings you've submitted thus far. And not because I like the band, though Radiohead is a nice band.

This painting is very easy on the eyes. I'm not exactly sure why, but I think it has to do with how easily you have made it for the eye to break the painting into columns. And then there's the nice contrast of the cool blues with the warm oranges.

The mood of a concert is portrayed very well. The bright lights, the smoke and fog, the constructs of the stage, and of course, the audience in the foreground.

This painting is exceptional anyways, but if you did this from memory and without a reference, it would make the painting that much more incredible.
