Description I saw something amazing, it was the best episode of any show this year so far (2013).  I loved it so much I had to do this artwork inspired by it.  It was the latest "The Legend of Korra" episode, where it explains where the Avatar comes from.  That's right, the same Avatar as in "Avatar: The Last Airbender".  This artwork is not really much of a spoiler as to what happens.  But this is a drawing of Wan when he first meets Raava and Vaatu.  There is a scene where they are rolling around together, revealing the spirits' true identities as Yin and Yang.  I put the words Yin and Yang at the top in ancient Chinese Seal Script.  10,000 years before Aang and Korra, there was no Avatar....  It is such a rich history the writers of the show came up with, it was awesome to see.

There's no evil without good,

And there is no good without evil.

Hmmm, so we should be evil, and hope that helps the good side grow stronger...  Actually did you know in ancient China the Yin and Yang represented light, dark, hot, cold, but it did not represent good and evil.  They thought of evil as an imbalance of Yin and Yang.  If you are too hot or too cold you could die, but balanced together you get warmth which is good.  This older view of Yin Yang makes more sense to me.  But I still liked the Story of the Legend of Korra, it rocks.

My theory was we are been born good and evil, just one side grow, if you know what I mean.

And yes, this original philosophy of Yin and Yang is much better and more logical

Okay, I was thinking about getting a tattoo like this when the time comes and yours came up and can I please use it? Pretty please? I wanted to do something Yin and Yang style with Raava and Vaatu and.. Omg. I'm really stunned. I'll even give you credit if I get it. ♥

That is fine, though I would really think about it first before doing something so permanent. But if you ever do decide, I am not against you using this particular artwork for anything, as long as you give me credit.

HeeHee! There so cute like that! when I saw this I was like. "Man, I bet Vaatu and Raava are blaming each other for this right now..."

Vaatu: Raava, if ur sewing skills weren't so horrible, WE WOULDN'T BE SEWN TOGETHER IN A GIANT BALL!!!!

Raava: SHUT UP!! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO KEPT WEAVING AROUND IN FRONT ME!!! IF YOU HADN'T DONE THAT, THEN THE NEEDLE WOULDN'T HAVE RAPPED US UP!!!!

Wan: Errrrr....

LOL! Yes they do look sewn together.  Although I was attempting to show the blur of the struggle between them, and the spin causing those marks. Hmmm.  Anyways, did you know that in the show when Wan first sees them they are rolling around together between the hills just like this, revealing their true identity as the Yin and Yang.

Yeah! Me and my sisters follow the show closely, and only watch it when we're all there so, I'm probably a little behind, but I totally know what you're talking about!

good stuff, and from what i understand, while the lion turtle DID give an the ability, they only saw it as a tool, it was only till thety study the badgermole, the dragon, the sky bisons and even the moon that they learn to use it as an extension of oneself.

Yes, that is a good point.  Although I am wondering if something became weaker when it was passed down.  Airbenders need gliders to fly in Aang's time, and firebenders would need to focus on the breath to even begin to use fire.  All the elements require a certain amount of discipline to even get them to work.  Remember the hard time Aang had with each element?

hmm that could be a number of reasons (back then you just gavin the power, now that it inherent one need to train to control it) another is due to sudden drop of lion turtle (Due to human hunting, ungrateful jerks) cause bending ability to somewhat weaken.

its odd cause in the first season they said that waterbenders learned bending from the sun and moon. air nomads from the sky bison. fire benders from the dragons. and earth benders from the badger moles. yet here they said that lion turtles gavme men the bending. WTF IS THE TRUTH

ps: wan is awesome

The bison, badger moles, and sun & moon, etc. did not create bending. They merely taught humans how to use it the correct way. You can through a flame at someone, but you don't know the forms or anything like that, so you don't really know how to firebend. Get it?

Yes, I really loved the explanation of the origin by itself and the episodes were so cool and connected so well with the show in many ways. But, like you said there are a few things that were not really explained.  How come Wan was bending earth, when the first earth benders are suppose to be Oma and Shu?  And how come the air nomads could fly without the use of gliders?  There was this one scene where Wan is perfecting his firebending with a Dragon, perhaps that is what is meant by man learning bending from the animals?  And the lion turtles left, and it was not said whether they left mankind with the elements?  Perhaps the benders are all descendants of Avatars, like Tanzin is a descendent of Aang; 10,000 years would make it so there would be thousands of benders of different kinds as descendants.

exelent theory but if you remember the firebending with the dragon was the dance aang and zuko found

Yes, that is a good point.  But dragons could have helped others in the future to learn those same moves.  Or perhaps the other possibility is the Lion Turtles did give the powers to more humans before they ended their association with them, and then Wan taught people what he had learned (but that is less likely because there would be earth benders all over the place before Oma and Shu).
