Description Easily the longest quantity of time I've ever spent on a piece. Bear in mind when when viewing that I started work on this piece in December 2004, and so my skills have evolved whilst in the process of creating it. I've genuinely lost count of the amount of hours spent on it; but it would be a huge amount.

I used pretty much all the techniques I could to try to make this piece as realistic as possible; no part of this picture you see before you is a photograph. Everything has been made in Photoshop; and I've slightly changed the colour of the white section of the car; originally it was more golden and creamy, but I thought that the more neutral tone gave a better contrast. EDIT: Actual colours now are applicable here. I wasnted to make it look as true to the original as possible. Numerous other little tweaks also. Just google "Maserati MC12" to see if I've succeeded.

This is the greatest testament to what my skills stetch to within this field; and I'm rather proud of this piece too. I've tweaked, re-tweaked, and scrapped parts of it a ludicrous amount. Number of total layers in the .psd lies somewhere around 400 (Most people have no idea of the work required for detailed illustration; but I'm sure for this piece the absolute minimum I've spent on it is 30 hours, and thats my most conservative guess.

I went for the more realistic look; as realistic as I was able to achieve within a respectable timeline. I don't think I did too badly; but I just have to look at the work of `dangeruss to bring me back down to earth. Reference picture was used here.

Check out my Quattroporte I did in the GIMP. [link] We probably used many of the same methods. My image has around 53 layers only because I had to merge some early on in the progression of the work just because it was too hard to manage with so many layers. I don't know how you kept up with 400+ layers! Anyway, let me know what you think. I really like your work. I would like to try a render of your modified Enzo. It would be neat to make it look realistic.

Great work! How many layers is your original PS file?

I could have swore I've just seen a photo in the exact same pose, exact same colour and - exact same writing style at the bottom.

Good tracing.

I never pretended it wasn't a trace - I have linked someone else to the original piece which is here: [link]

The writing is actually mine, so if the picture you saw carried the exact same text, then that would be my piece, and so if you could refer the link I would appreciate it.

Although it is a copy it doesn't alter the fact that it was made entirely by my work in Photoshop, and I have a few hundred layers of psd to prove that.

You drew this? Holy crapola!

When I saw the tumbnail I thought this was a 3D render....

I think that the bottom of it is a bit hazy though. Where the car merges into shadow, it's a little too indistinct somehow.

And the hole at the front, by the front wheel really looks wrong. After looking at the photo you referenced from I see what you mean about there being a hole there 9and it just looks wrong even on the photo), but in the photo you can see the tread of the tyre. And there is quite a bit more light being cast on the tyre than there is in your picture..

Thanks for the informative critique. About the bottom being hazy: I'll try to distinguish it a little more. I'm starting to run into problems regarding the different settings on monitors that mean some details are lost. The same thing applies for the tread of the tire; in the sourcefile I included more detail, but their opacity must have been so low that some people can't see them. I'll try to come up with a workaround.

Thanks again

This is something very, very accurate work. 30 hours.. That's nice.

Excellent work! This could EASILY pass as a render in a 3D program.

I love the MC12 to begin with, and you've done an excellent job of capturing the unique lines and curves of this fantastic supercar.
If you couldn't tell from my avatar, I'm an avid enthusiast for italian car design, and this is a brilliant example as to why. I wish I could see the psd to look at all the layers!

Any chance you're an F1 fan?

I'm a car admirer in terms of simply drooling over them, and I'm more of a passive F1 watcher, as in if it's on, I won't turn it off. Thanks a lot for the comment, but for security reasons I would prefer not to give away the sourcefile .psd to this piece. It's just that I spent a lot of my life on this piece, and so feel quite personal about this one in particular.

I'm sorry, I hope you don't think I was asking you to share the psd. What I meant was that would be a mind numbing sight for anyone other than the one who worked with and created it. 400+ layers, I can't think that way!
I'd love to see a thousand more of these! If you're open to suggestions, I would say try an F40, F50, McLaren F1, or a Diablo 5.0 or earlier model...
Glad to have found you, looking forward to facilitating even greater discussions in the future!

I must say, the F50 is probably my favourite Ferrari, so I may well be doing that soon. That said, I've already done a Ferrari, so chances are I'll go for the McLaren F1 or the Lambourgini. Lambourginis appeal to me simply because the are so ostentatious and arrogant; they scream to the viewer "I am more important than you." Since I'm having a little creative block right now, one of these will likely be started soon.

I definately prefer the Lambos of the 80s and 90s to todays. The new ones (Murcielago and Gallardo) are beautiful and great, but they don't BITE at the eye the way the Diablos do.
The McLaren F1 is one of my all time favorites, a true supercar that was designed to be driven everyday. And it still holds the production model land speed record.

Can you recommend any good reference pictures for either of those cars?

I can send you some, I have thousands. Send me a note with your e-mail address and I'll make a zip file of them. Which in particular, the Lamborghinis and McLaren F1s? Anything else?
Also, check out my site where I post my supercar pictures and my car-related photoshops. Those are mostly photomanips, which is why I don't post them here.
Here's the [link]
Be sure to check out all the folders there.
Let me know in a note what your email is and which cars you want pics of.

Awesome but.. should you be able to see the wheel through a whole in the chassis?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jem58 In reply to HAMMER-TIME [2005-04-23 21:40:18 +0000 UTC]

Damn different brightness levels in Photoshop...

The answer to your question is no. In PS the image appears brighter and so you would be able to see more easilt the carbon fibre rear fender which blocks vision of the other wheels. However, it looks darker here and so you can't notice it. Better correct that.

Look at the picture again; hopefully it's a little better now.

no theres a rather large hole at the front, im sure there should be some bodywork there

otherwise, this is damn cool, i thought it was a render for a moment, very impressive!

jem58 In reply to elquin96 [2005-04-24 09:59:08 +0000 UTC]

Ah; now I see what you mean. No, there shouldn't be any bodywork there; its a little feature of the car (look here if you don't believe me) But, chances are you haven't seen the car before, and so you wouldn't know that. I think I'm going to tweak the piece a bit to shrink the difference between the two a little more, looking at the original photo again..

Thanks
