Description
I made it into the Illustration major of my graphic design diploma! Yey! (no more brooding about my lack of passion in my course lol) Here's the first batch of assignments, very hectic period. Too much to say, other than the prompts given comprised of an abstract word mashed together with a non-abstract word. We had to do minimum 20 sketches (often having our sketches redrawn after first critique), and pick the best 8 to digitise. This was on top of another 20 sketches we had to do for the other part of this assignment (name typography), of which the best 4 had to be digitised. (40 SKETCHES IN TOTAL AND 12 DIGITISED ILLUSTRATIONS. All this within the time span of 3 weeks with other subjects' work too @_@ hardly slept much)And (roughly) from left to right, top to bottom:
Phobia Reporter, Internet Warrior, China Nurse, Alien Gardener, Japan Nurse, Japan Artist, Internet Adventurer, Phobia Truckdriver.
Props to you if you can figure out the references I made through the Japan Nurse, Japan Artist and Phobia Truckdriver.
Each character took about 5-7 hours from sketch to finish.

I love the internet ones! And Japan Artist looks so happy; does his reference have to do with that one painting of the waves? That's what the water is reminding me of.

Holy...WHY DO THEY MAKE YOU DO SO MUCH WORK?! Argh, just reading that description is driving me crazy by proxy!
Still, these are really good. The light effects seem a bit much to me now, might just be the way they're all presented right next to each other rather than being their own unique images like on the streams. Definitely have to say the Interknight is my favorite of the bunch still, though I also like the Alien Gardener and Japan Artist quite a bit. And even though I complained about the lighting a second ago, it definitely does great things for the Japan Nurse and the two metallic Internet characters, and it falls pretty softly on the Phobia Reporter and China Nurse too. Again, feel like it's the ones with really strong lighting being right next to the ones with less glare that's making my eyes cross, nothing wrong with the individual images.
I am kind of curious how you went about deciding how specifically to represent each concept, but I'm not sure if that's something you can really articulate all that well. I mean, I've had similar prompts in my writing classes (where there's a five- or ten-minute time limit on a single piece of writing that generally isn't graded...come on, Singaporean art professors, let your people breathe!), but the whole point on those is that there's no time for thought and no reason to edit so you just grab whatever's on your mind, sync it up to a keyword/first sentence, and get going.
