Description This work is an example for a compliation article I'm putting together on ways to make something new out of old, unfinished or unsatisfactory art.

Made from

The inspiration for this came from a series color wheels that I made as part of testing out paper brands in an art class. In themselves, they were nothing special, but some cutting and pasting gave them a new life as rainbow flowers. I used a bit of another watercolor texture for the trees and combined them over a background created on three small 5x7 pieces of watercolor paper of unknown origin that I found stashed in a bookcase.

How do you think they turned out?

Would this collage technique be something you would try in the future to make something new out of old work?

Find me on Facebook!

I appreciate the idea of recycling! And I think the flowers are really lovely.
I have to look through my own old paintings...

I often did the random painted papers with a class of 3-4 year olds, we called it "making beautiful papers". These were then cut or torn into pieces and used to great effect to make collages. I still do this in my studio, testing different media or techniques, even the paper towels I use to clean my brushes are not exempt! I keep them and have used them in other works. This series of collages is really beautiful use of "beautiful papers"

"Watercolor paper of unknown origin" is a phrase I have to use more often.

Haha. I have a large envelope that contains tons of paper that fit into exactly that category. Often I'l get one sheet of paper to try and use only a portion of of it and it gets tossed into the stash.

... Random unrelated question, but have you tried the Yupo plastic watercolour paper or the Strathmore with the plastic in it? Stretching is such a bore.

I love the yupo for abstract work, but it's really hard to keep realistic works on it. I just use 300# paper then I don't stretch it.

Here are some examples of work on yupo:
