- Part 1: Igma -

At the Evil Public School:

Igma stared at his face in the mirror.

He’d been standing in front of his bathroom mirror with his coat collar folded down for half an hour now. Not that he had any particular business in the bathroom, it was the only room with a mirror in his living space at the Evil Public School since he didn’t like keeping mirrors around and it was already there when he was hired.

Eyeing the stitches across his mouth, it was no surprise his appearance was a deterrent to other people. Not that Igma minded, and at most times preferred it. But now things were different. There was no longer a desire to hide from the rest of humanity. He had rejected the world because it rejected him first, but now it seemed to be fading. The world that was so cold and cruel to him for most of his life wasn't such an unwelcoming place as it used to be.

A sudden voice behind Igma snapped him out of his thoughts. “Staring at your face all night isn’t going to make it pretty.”
“Ozlowe,” Igma could see the short humanoid rat dressed like a custodian in the mirror’s reflection. “Have you no sense of privacy?”

The rat man laughed. “I was making the rounds to empty the trash and saw the door was open.” He responded in his usual relaxed tone.

The rat was leaning against the bathroom doorway with his arms crossed. The school custodian was once a ratnician type henchman for Dr. Cortex but had been dismissed for his lack of ruthlessness. He worked well for custodial duties at the Evil Public School with his go-with-the-flow attitude and naturally friendly personality.

And the rat certainly was friendly. He made an effort to socialize with Igma despite Igma’s aversion to socializing with the rest of the school staff. He preferred to keep to himself but the rat always sought him out. Most likely because they both tended to be up at night since Igma couldn’t be active during the day and rats were nocturnal creatures by nature. So Igma was often stuck putting up with the humanoid rodent and his curiosity and lack of personal space or privacy.

"Just what do you want?"

The rat cocked an eye at him. "Just curious. You've been spending an awful lot more time over at that other school. More so than usual."

"So...?"

"Oh, just wondering... if that woman had something do with it. You know, that lady teacher who shows up here once in a while to spy. The one you happen to be very fond of... and by fond I mean obsessed with."

Igma's eyes narrowed, not liking where the topic of the conversation was going. "Begone rat."

"Relax, man. I'm just curious is all." Ozlowe leaned in closer, a sly smile stretched across his face. "There's something going on, isn't there?"

Igma tried to blow him off. "Like you would know. You just sweep floors all day."

"Oh please, like I can't figure out what goes on with you?" Ozlowe rolled his eyes "You never wash your clothes, you rarely bathe and I have a great sense of smell, being a rodent. I can smell her scent on you!"

"That's just gross."

"No, what's gross is you and your terrible habits."

"How do you even know what Claudia smells like?"

"She leaves me tied up in a locker any time she shows up here."

Igma laughed. "I'm actually jealous."

"Hah! I knew it, you two are totally a thing."

Igma grumbled. The rat was not only persistent but also clever.

"C'man man, what's wrong, why you standing there all glum whispering her name to yourself? Don't tell me its trouble in paradise?"

Igma sighed. "Hardly."

The rat's eyes widened with genuine curiosity. "Hm?"

Igma sighed, annoyed by the rat's persistence, but also his own personal frustration. “She'll kiss me, but she won’t let me kiss her.”

“I can see why” Said Ozlowe, looking at Igma’s face in the mirror.

Igma couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or making a genuine observation.

"So what's the deal with that string on your mouth? If you don't like it, why don't you just cut it off?"

"It's spell-thread."

"Okay."

"That means it's what gives me the ability to cast magic verbally, without needing a magical object like a wand or artifact.

"Ah, so you have to chose between the girl or power, huh?"

"Among other things. I'll be able to eat normally again."

Igma uttered some magical words under his breath. The words were incomprehensible, almost ethereal sounding, as if not of this world. A few seconds later the thread binding his lips loosened and one end became undone. He reached into his mouth and carefully began pulling the thread out, one hole after the other.

Ozlowe watched as Igma slowly worked the thread out of his lips. “Man that is gross.”

After the thread was completely removed Igma rubbed the corners of his mouth, observing the holes left behind. The scars would remain, but at least he could open his mouth fully again. His jaw popped as he stretched his mouth wide open, something he hadn't been able to do in years.

"Dude, your breath." Ozlowe had a disgusted look on his face. "I hope this means you'll start brushing your teeth again too."

Igma rolled his eyes. "In the world of magic nothing ever comes without sacrifice."

"Sacrificing what you want to get power, or sacrificing power to get what you want?"

"It's all the same." Igma said as he wound up the thread and put it into his coat pocket.

Ozlowe smirked. "Giving up power for her, huh?"

"Sort of. I just wont be able to cast spells verbally."

"Think she'll bang you now?"

Igma's skeletal hand erupted with flames. "BEGONE RAT!"

Another chapter for my "Academy of Evil" series.

Igma's life is changing, but he doesn't really understand it yet.
Being fired from the Academy of Evil actually worked out for the better for Igma. At the Evil Public School Igma's peers don't have a prejudgment of him and being out of an environment with a painful personal history gives him a new perspective on life and himself.

He reluctantly found a friend in Ozlowe, who's just a positive guy not phased by Igma's coldness. Ozlowe has also been a good influence on him, and was the one who advised Igma to stop being forceful and weird at Claudia, which helped improve his relationship with her as well.

Part 2 is in the works and will be from Claudia's perspective. (with N. Brio!)
