The reason they make characters silent is so you can project yourself onto the character, feels like you are the character. Also so you can't complain about their personality 'cause they don't have one. (I hate Sora -_-')
There is evidence that Link speaks based on what people say, but he doesn't say much. I personally like the strong silent types! It's pretty funny, the people of Hyrule sure do like to talk though, Link couldn't get a word in other than yes or no if he tried!

Okay, sure, I guess I can undestand having a personality completely opposite of the other characters to balance out the mood but still... Sora just seems to choose not to understand what is going on around him to keep from being brought down. Also, I get freaked out by the main Disney cast like Donald, Goofy and Mickey, it's like hanging out with Barney which is always awkward. Everytime I hear Mickey's voice I bury my face in shame hoping no one is watching, he's a great fighter though, like Yoda! That also makes me feel bad when Mickey out fights me. ^-^'

There's a ton load of "Silent Protagonists" out there (although I always found that term a bit misleading). Link, I guess, is one of those classic examples.
Although, to be honest, I would rather he didn't keep sounding like there was something in his tunic, biting his particulars. Because, frankly, that's what it sounds likes.
