Description Hello!

I finished in time! Happy Birthday Jin!

I made myself a promise at the beginning of the year to make a portrait drawing for each member (current and ex) of KAT-TUN on their birthdays. Why you might ask? Well, so I would make sure that I would make at least six pieces of art for myself! Every year I spend the majority of my time making artwork for other people and this is my way of creating something for me.

I decided for Akanishi Jin, that I would try a full color pencil portrait. :gasp: I can't believe it either! I've never done an only color pencil portrait, as the past two attempts relied heavily on chalk pastels.

Color pencil portraits are so difficult! Especially when you don't know what the hell you're doing. I consulted these wonderful tutorials before beginning the drawing:

~Crimefish [link] ; *Elengwat [link] ; ~Verlisaerys [link] ; ~XFadedToBlackX [link]

Those all came in handy in various ways...thank you fellow deviants!

This was a study of medium, every bit as much as likeness. I mostly concentrated on the portrait and hair. Please disregard the fact that everything below his chin is unfinished. The shoulders were placed just to support his head.

I'll be back to update the image with higher quality. I wasn't going to post it, but then decided that even though I'm on my way out the door for a weekend Holiday, I really wanted to post this for his birthday, July 4th!

Hope you all enjoy! Thanks for stopping by!

COLOUR!

This is amazing! That medium is indeed quite tricky. How did you find Prismacolors on Bristol? I've heard people say that it's too smooth for coloured pencil work, so I've used cartridge paper instead, but I'm thinking of giving it a go.

Thank you!!!

As for how I found Prismacolos on Bristol...I really have nothing to compare it to. I didn't hate it, but I was always under the impression that colored pencils should be used on smooth surfaces. Is this wrong? I tired to find the smoothest surface I had and it happened to be Bristol. You know me, I like to make my drawings as smooth as possible! I'm actually thinking of trying another piece using the same medium combination.

How is it with cartridge paper? Is it difficult? Actually, what is cartridge paper?

I've been told that colours seem less intense on Bristol. I've used this one www.theartshop-watergategaller... and it felt quite nice, it had just a tiny bit of tooth and the colours looked great. I also like how Prismas look in Moleskine sketchbooks. Ugh, must try Bristol sometime.

Thanks for the link! When I get a bit of extra cash, I'll grab me some of that paper and give it go!

Hmm, the colour might not be as bright on Bristol than on other, more proper, paper. I really don't know---sorry!

But, I guess the best thing would be to try the Bristol and see how you like it? You never know right? You may either love it or hate it. Whenever you get around to trying Bristol, could you let me know how you found it? Especially if you end up hating it and decide against uploading the final product. I'd love to know why you hated it and which paper you found the best of the three: cartridge, Bristol, and Moleskine (that's an awesome paper---I have a sketchbook of that somewhere).

That's sad! Maybe next year?  Then again, you could always draw something without it being his birthday...

Thank you so very much! It's one of my favorite photos of him too, for the same reasons!

Thank you so very much for sending me that link!!! Luckily I managed to hear it off of FB before it was taken down!!! I, honestly, really like the song. I think it's catchy. Hey, What's Up?

I'm happy with the title track, and it's a good thing too, b/c I purchased all four editions before hearing it.  However, I'm not entirely sure about the other two tracks, as the little clips really haven't given me much to go on. I think I'm really going to like Key to Your Heart and my best friend really likes what she's heard of Summer Loving. I'm not to sure about either of them yet, but I didn't hate the clips when I first heard them---I just need to hear the full song first, you know?

What about you? Do you like what you've heard? Or do you think Jin's being a dumbass again, going for club when he really should learn to put out more ballads?

shinjistar In reply to jennieannie [2013-07-27 20:00:25 +0000 UTC]

nah, i prefer pop/club music over ballads lol so i'm happy with these tracks

but tbh i'm just happy hearing his voice, i don't care what forme/style of music it's in

though i was kinda hoping at least one of the tracks would be a ballad on the single, esp. 'cause the others are all pop lol [i've heard previews of all the tracks, they're all uploaded somewhere on tumblr], i was kinda hoping for something more like "ムラサキ/murasaki" from his eternal single, though♥ [i really really like that song >w<]

the pv for hey what's up looks great though jin's dancing looks amazing as usual and the whole thing looks like a fun summer party >w<

i haven't purchased the single yet, but i'll probably see if i can get it later ;u; i don't really buy the CDs since i don't really have money orz [i'm still quite young so i live with my parents still lol]

Being young doesn't mean anything! I had trouble coming up with money myself. When you don't live with your parents you have all these bills you have to pay first just to live and then you can think of spending money. I ended up selling a bunch uni text books and DVDs I didn't want anymore.

I really do like the song myself. It's my kind of song and like you the first thing I commented on was: how wonderful it was to hear his voice in a new song. I really wanted at least one Murasaki/Seasons type ballad but oh well, I can wait!

The PV definitely looks great! It's so wonderful to see him looking happy!

haha well, it's not necessarily money, i suppose? i guess i said that wrong because i buy a lot of things (like manga ), but you know they don't really sell j-pop CDs here & my parents don't like ordering things from the 'net that much

a local japanese bookshop near me used to sell CDs, but then they stopped for some reason ;u; now the only store near me that sells them is like an hour away ///so i don't go there that often orz and whenever i go there i tend to buy anime/manga stuff since their CDs are quite overpriced...i bought the LE version of to the limit there, and it was almost $30!...which to me seems a little high that store has a lot of magazines though, and i tend to browse through them there whenever i go >w< i love looking through their wink up issues LOL

and yeah, i love pop music, so i guess i can't complain with this song but either way, i'm happy he's back, so i'm sure we'll get more ballads in the future lol

Sorry for such a late reply!!! I've been both a bit busy and sick. So I haven't really been online all that much...at least not .

Did you ever figure out how to get your copy of Hey What's Up? I can understand your frustration of trying to get JE stuff!!! It's also difficult to get them here. The closest place that sells them in my area is almost 3 hours away. o_O So for me, I purchase online: ebay (for the older stuff that I still don't have) and CDJapan for all new stuff. Shpping is horrible, but at least it gets here. Magazines though, magazines require the travel time of 3 hours to go through, and last time I went there weren't any good magazines. However they did play Yamapi's One in a Million in the store while I was there.

Anyways, even though there isn't a proper ballad, I LOVE his song, Key to Your Heart!!!! It's soooooo catchy! Love that. So happy he's back.

ah, it's fine, i've been busy too ;u; plus i go back to school soon, so yeah

ughhh actually i haven't ordered jin's single, but i did manage to buy copies of old kat-tun albums such as chain & break the records i bought them off a japanese shopping site, and the break the records one is slightly used, but in nearly perfect condition♥

ahhh, have you heard yamapi's nocturne ? (off of his new summer nude single ~) i absolutely love it! it's been a while since yamapi has done dance music

i love key to your heart as well~~ i just love his voice there though summer loving isn't too bad either

Hello! Sorry that it takes so long for me to get back to . I've been spending more time on other sites like lj, twitter and recently tumblr and end up forgetting about . Oops.

I think that's great that you managed to buy some KAT-TUN albums! I still need to get my own copies. I just have my friend's copies right now.

Also, yes I heard Pi's Nocturne and I wish he'd do more of that! I haven't really heard much off of A NUDE, except the one with Fujigaya. I really, really REALLY like that one!

Hope school isn't too bad for you!
