Description

I think one of the main challenges these days for 3D rendering artists is it to make the skin of a human character kind of believable. Over the years I thought I have found a fairly good recipe within the boundaries of our free software DAZ Studio, but you know, technology evolves and the goal to constantly improve the own work lead to more experimenting with the DAZ Iray shader and it's options. This process revealed some deficiencies when rendering with Spectral method, which was usually my preferred method for skin. It all of the sudden turned my long used settings upside down and I had to experiment again, a lot, to find a setting for a believable skin without Spectral until NVidia can resolve these issues - it is not a problem with DAZ Studio, it's indeed the Iray Render Engine that needs some work.Β

Anyway, skin settings are very complex, the adjustments work like gear wheels in a clock, if you adjust this you have to adjust that and that and that also, Subsurface Scattering relates to Bump and Translucency, colors and weights of the channels influence each other and so on. One of the best skin bases IMO is Kimo, a DAZ Original Skin for Genesis 3 Male, I worked with him in several different scenes with very different lighting conditions on Genesis 8 Male. Image above is the darkest scene with only three mesh lights. I havn't found a new skin recipe yet, I try to be open and also look at other characters and what skin settings they work with, but so far no one could surprise me.

Anyway, result of the work with this particular character are all in all six 2K Q and 4K HQ images with nude Kimo in an apocalyptical room environment that can be viewed in my Patreon gallery.

He really is a beautiful character.Β

I feel you when it comes to trying to make skin more realistic. And eyes. Even when I feel I've tweaked the skin enough, I have trouble making the eyes believable. I have yet to find a really exceptional set of eye textures. Some are obviously better than others but yeah, I would like to figure out how to make the eyes more realistic.Β

I agree that skin is very complex. Hopefully as we learn and as tech improves, we'll be able to create even more beautiful renders.Β

Gorgeous work here! Love the lighting so much.

Thank you Liz and I agree, eyes are very important, especially with that weird geometry that Genesis 8 has, I always have to tweak the Cornea/Moisture for the reflection amount and color, always make the pupils smaller that I have enough iris to show, I always set the Cornea Bulge to 50%, usually I set the diffuse color of the Sclera to a 220 value instead of 255 that the white doesn't burn out when rendering and most important, I ALWAYS go to the Pose Controls of the head and set the "Eyes Crossed" dial to -10, to get rid of the cross-eyed look G8 always has - I really can't stand that by default G8 always looks cross-eyed! Β
With the lighting in the image above I wanted to have the look of a Police Car standing in the near, I hope I could achieve that somehow.

I think I'm going to have to try your secrets for the eyes, thanks for sharing them

Interessante Farben und Licht. Kunst muss meiner Meinung nach nicht unbedingt realistisch sein ...
