Description Somehow my best works are always done because of women...

And this one was a bitch. Uhm... I mean this piece, not this girl!

Really! I know it could use a LOT of love still, like better materials, textures and lighting, not to mention more render-time to get rid of all this fireflies... But hell get me if I'm going to do it right now. I've sit through it for waaaay too long, mostly wasting my free (or sleep) time.

Cuz' first - Blender Internal renderer proved to not only suck at glossy materials, it proved it takes a full black gangbang. And gladly. Yafaray did a decent job, but with lack of material fine-tuning options it wasn't good enough. So then - tested Lux Renderer and Nox Renderer. And both of them are just LOVELY. And also, crashed after about 10 minutes of rendering. So I've started diagnostics on my PC, found new RAM and HD to buy just in case and spend 48h testing, testing, testing. And who knows? It turned out my BIOS for SOME UNGODLY REASON underplayed RAM voltage by 15%. Restored native voltage, and everything works just fine. And by everything, I mean everything BUT Lux Renderer, that I wanted to use. One second - it works, another - it doesn't. So after about 20 re-installations of every and any combination of Lux 0.8 / 0.9 and Blender 2.58 / 2.59 and even forcing both of them to versions know to work, that my friend send me... It turns out, that Blender startup file, that even the portable versions for some UNHOLY reason keeps at "windowsian" location was... I don't even know what was wrong with it, I just banished it to hell and it works. And no, simply using "restore factory defaults" didn't work.

So - model in Blender, 8h of rendering in Lux render, tonemapping in Photomatrix, little post in Photoshop. And here it is.

Also, as I found some time for my personal projects, I got ANOTHER commission. Why does they come, when I don't need more? And they doesn't, when I die of hunger?

YOU ROCK, MATES! 1k in 7h? THANKS!

For all the hard work it took to make this image with an excellent render as a result, you did a fantastic job and a DD well deserved!

Great work, but I little notice: traditionally masters places 4 as "IIII" not as "IV" on the clock face.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JeremiachGottwald In reply to Ratix2 [2011-10-17 07:49:26 +0000 UTC]

And I'm not a traditional master...

Still, while I knew that IIII is sometimes used instead of IV, I did not know that this is such a tradition. I've found myself quite interested in the topic... and this means my "morning reading" will be a little more interesting than usual news from around the globe - so thanks!

I think this looks really nice. Could you explain a little why you are annoyed with the"fire flies"? I assume you are talking about the reflections here and there from the grittiness of the stone table? I looked carefully and I think they are what you'd get from such a material.
And as you say, I think it would deserve some more texturing. Some dirt and scratches and perhaps an engraving on the metal would make this picture go from Joy to Love.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JeremiachGottwald In reply to Oskar-A [2011-09-25 14:49:09 +0000 UTC]

Well... As I look at it after few days passed, I need to say, there aren't really no fireflies as bad as I believed. Maybe we 3D artists just have a thing for small, glowing pixels. Like a phobia

And as for texturing - 100% agree on engravings, dirt and scratches? not so much. In the meaning it should get a little bit of those as "material imperfection" but not as "proof of usage" - but this is just a matter of personal preferences I usually take "new and shiny route" for small objects that are a piece themselves, and "old and rusty route" for props or bigger objects.

Oskar-A In reply to JeremiachGottwald [2011-09-25 15:50:30 +0000 UTC]

If you have a phobia for small glowing pixels I think you should stay away from stone backgrounds! Personaly I like it, as long as they are not render artifacts.
I would definitely settle for material imperfections and an engraving.
To continue being difficult; I found another thing to complain about: Look at the reflections in the top most, right most part of the lid. The polygons are showing ang giving them a weird look. At least I think that is what I see.

Lovely work here. I, too, thought it was a photo, until I saw the comment underneath it. Amazing what people can do with computers these days, eh?
Like *UKTara , I like pocket watches. I recently bought one that doesn't work, but I'll change the battery in it. It's gotta be the battery. I looked inside it and I don't think the current battery works. I'm rambling...
I love this render. You're amazing. And I'm sorry about your computer troubles; computers are finicky little bitches, aren't they?
