Description 2004, Oil on Canvas, about 3' x 4'. This painting is part of my "Dinosaurs in the Bible" series, inspired by the comedian Bill Hicks: "If the Earth is 12,000 years old and the Bible covers it, where are the fucking dinosaurs?" The series is a tongue-in-cheek attempt to answer Bill's question: Dinosaurs are in the Bible, you've just got to read between the lines. This painting shows the extinction of the dinosaurs in the great flood. Noah had to leave them behind because there wasn't enough room on the ark. Other, less ironic answers to the question of dinosaurs in the Bible have been proposed:

This one suggests that the Bible's Leviathan was a kronosaur (one which breathed fire, no less!): [link]

This one says T-rex was a vegetarian before the Fall of Man: [link]

Oh, and this one says that dinosaurs DID make it on the ark (and went extinct later, apparently): [link]

I'll let this headline speak for itself: "New Evidence Suggests That Noah's Sons Rode Flying Dinosaurs." [link]

Okay, that last one was a joke. Anyway, you get the idea. Google "dinosaur bible" for more amusing theories.

Oh snap...I was drawn to the pic because I wouldn't be surprised if those left behind either got smothered by land slides, smashed against debris, drowned or eaten by newly invasive sea predators.

For me, if Jesus can multiply food from a kid's lunch I think he can have the Ark fit a pair of every land and air creature on the planet. God is not limited by laws of nature, time, space and matter (personal experience testifies with supernatural healing to my body and interaction with spirits).

There are relics and objects from every continent depicting dino-like creatures, head crests, long necks, massive sea dragons, etc. People don't make art of creatures they're never seen so my assumption is that these giant creatures made it past the flood but didn't last too much longer in history either due to changes in the planet after the Flood, over-hunting or both. This global cataclysm wasn't just rain, there were drastic changes in the atmosphere and devastating seismic activity. Water gushed from channels above and below and left the earth looking like a cracked egg with completely different continent shapes and water levels.Β  Just a thought~

Also reading between the lines just causes more problems such as why would God kill off tens upon thousands of other species?

One main problem that I see with your description is that in Hebrew, the Leviathan is referred to as a whale. This would make sense since the Blue Whale is the largest creature ever to have existed.

I know, right?! Although, being a dinosaur nut, I would argue that some sauropods could have been larger than the blue whale...

I know this is old but that person in wrong.Β  The Leviathan was a fire-breathing sea dragon with SCALES and sharp teeth according to Job 41.Β  Whales do not have scales nor do they breath fire.

Hebrew (livyathan), meaning "twisted," "coiled." Sounds very dragon/snake-like.

And to that, I counter: Who would be able to get close enough to Leviathan to be able to figure out it has scales? People have been pulling shit out their asses about animals for years, the same would apply here. As for the fire, easy - water vapor from the blowhole getting misinterpreted as steam or smoke.

i think the animals that were put on the ark were all near to babies... and dinos were pretty darn small as babies... so there's and idea, seeing as Job 40-3? kinda described dinosaurs (one looked to be a diploticus or something... the other was a dragon?)
and i LOVE this pic.

Wow! cuz the dinosaurs in movies are true to life representations of the actual breathing animals themselves.
Anyways, I like this piece a lot, because it was the same sort of thing i thought about when I was a kid.

ok... i read the "Flying Dinosaurs" link... i love how the bible thumpers latch into a study that "reinforces the link between dinosaurs and birds" as "evidence" that Noah's sons rode flying dinosaurs to all corners of the globe. oi!

i really don't see what all the fuss is about. i think it matters more where we chose to go from here, then where/when we came from.

your painting is fantastic! "mm... unicorn... delicious."
i also like the implication that the aquatic animals we have to day may be evolved[ooh, dirty word] from aquatic dinosaurs/fish wich survived the flood; tho i'm not certain that was your intent.
well done.

I think that "flying dinosaurs" link was a joke. Still hilarious, either way.

My intent was to invite viewers to attempt to extrapolate implications such as yours, so although I wasn't that specific about it, it is what I wanted you (the viewer) to be able to do. I'm more interested in asking questions, or getting others to ask questions, than to hand out answers.

Thanks!

Yeah...I'm more science based than faith based...but I was raised Christian and still hold on to some of the "traditions", if you'd like to say it lik that. I've known I was going to be a Paleontologist since I was three and haven't wavered since. There's something intriguing about learning where you came from and what the world looked like millions of years ago.

I've never really been bit on the whole 'evolution-or-creation' belief. I mean...correct me if I'm wrong, but a deity, religion, etc, that you place your faith and trust in should and will always have an aire of mystisism about it. If a person believes that their god(s) were able to create the universe but not create science and evolution, then one must seriously reevaluate their religion or belief system.

I myself refuse to put God in a box. I believe in evolution, and I believe in Creation. It makes no nevermind to me. Great to hear from you again! Hope to talk to you more!

That, and i think the main difference between science and creationists is that scientists are willing to say "I dont know"

And then look for the answer.

Vera nice-a! I myself, as a Christian, have always pondered the thought of evolution (gasp...that's right ....I said it. Well...typed it) and the thought of people coming after dinosaurs. Not getting into that now...a very awesome painting! Totally intriguing and I absolutely love it! As an aspiring paleontologist, and paleo-artist, I'm always on the lookout for great art to stare at.

This is one of them there great arts.

Reeeeally tired. Off to bed.

Beautiful. I, as an atheist, find the evolution-creation debate fascinating. What is most interesting about it, to me, is that I must acknowledge that my belief in evolution is as much an act of faith as a Christian's faith in the Bible. I say that I base my beliefs on evidence, but in reality, I'm just taking a scientist's word for something, rather than a priest's. This, my own hypocrisy, causes me occasional cognitive dissonance, but not in an unpleasant way, just an interesting way. I must say that I am very honored to have met a Christian paleo-artist. In my opinion, that takes great strength of character. Have a good night, and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.
