Description This was a commissioned ring made for an old friend of mine. He gave me the creative freedom and the budget to design a floral inspired ring of my choosing

I covered the entire sterling band with 14k gold pierced and hand engraved overlay. A large fiery bright green Andamooka Matrix gem opal set in 22k gold tops of the ring.

Entire ring was hand fabricated.
Andamooka Matrix Gem Opal cut by Mark.

Yes.. we have our hands full! I have a bunch of X-Mas jewelry to make for family members and a few custom orders to complete as well. Mark is a power-house... he works a full time job as well as doing jewelry work and gem cutting. I seem to have much less energy since being pregnant but Mark is doing a great job picking up the slack. He's the best

Mark had planned to start working at home on the jewelry and gem stuff full time.. but then I got pregnant. Now we need his insurance and extra income from his job. He works as a pit boss at the local casino. He works 3 long shifts there a week and then works at home in the studio on jewelry and gem cutting 4 days a week.
I'm now 5 1/2 months pregnant We found out about 2 weeks ago that we're having a girl.... which is what I was hoping for
Mark will be leaving the casino gig eventually.. hopefully shortly after the birth of the baby.

Wow.. three boys?? You guys must have your hands full! Mark really doesn't have the free time to do both...but he does it anyway We've been trying to buy every last piece of jewelry equipment we need for our business. We've bought all the stuff we need for casting reproductions Now Mark wants to buy a laser welder

Yes... nice tools are never cheap. We spend more money on tools and rough gem materials than we do on things like food!

Wow.. that was a speedy reply!! Thanks for the nice comment on the ring. It's not my favorite... but I do like the overlay detailing quite a bit. I'm pretty new at jewelry work compared to you.. I saw you've been making jewelry for about 17 years, right? I started in 2005. My business partner/fiance Mark has a bit more time under his belt.. about 10 years. He cuts most of our gems as well as doing all his own wax models and casting. I have a great teacher so eventually I'll soak up all of his knowledge

I'm glad I found your gallery today! I see Mark had already watched you but I hadn't seen your work until today. Do you work with ?

Yes, the monkey belongs to me! He is my fiance, and a wonderfull guy! How did you figure that out? Casting is so much fun, but we have to source it out at this stage (until we get our own plant). It seems like you guys have a wonderfull partnership!

Cool!Yes.. I'm very lucky to have such a wonderful guy in my life. It's great having a partner with the same love for art, jewelry and gems.... and it sounds like you two have the same mutual interests
I figured out that you two work together after seeing some of the comments posted on the Viking and some pieces you made for the same client. I really like the work both of you do!

Yes.. green is actually one of the more common colors in many opal varieties. We have lots of opal jewelry and opal specimens where green is the strongest color.
These are just a handful....

nice ring, i've never cut andamooka opal. is it pourus like hondouras opal which requires some sorta sealant to get a good polish?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jessa1155 In reply to The-EvIl-Plankton [2008-08-10 03:45:48 +0000 UTC]

There are two varieties of Andamooka Matrix opal. The version you're referring to is called Andamooka Rainbow Matrix opal~[link]
It is indeed similar to the Honduras matrix and does require a sealant such as Opticon. Most of our jewelry uses the second variety which is the gem grade from Andamooka called "Andamooka Gem Matrix opal'. It is a hard, less porous variety that takes a perfect polish~[link]
It is rare and much more valuable than the more porous non-gem grade. I went to South Australia in 2006 and was able to buy rough opal directly from miners at the Andamooka opal fields~[link]
The mine is almost totally shut down now producing very little opal.
This ring is Andamooka Gem Matrix

Thanks for the comment

interesting, how lucky you are to be able to buy directly from the miners. i am unfortunetly on the wrong continent for that! one of my goals is to visit australia in a few years. it'll take me that long to save up for the trip. thnx for the info!

Yeah.. it took me awhile to save up! I flew out of Arizona to L.A., L.A. to to Sydney and then onto a small domestic flight from there. But the expense was well worth the effort

Good looking green opal, just beautiful. Color of the stone works great with gold setting.

I like those carvings in the flowers too. That kind of added details is the thing that makes me tick. Like icing on the cake.
