That is a very impressive collection of precious opal. The sparkle (particularly all the rainbow colors) coming from each, and the diversity of color on the actual stones, are two qualities standing out immediately in the shot. Also, the photograph is taken with very crisp outlines, and ease of seeing details (no blur).

This also couldn't have been cheap to acquire. Thanks for sharing a collection of this type online.

Thanks! Quite a bit of the opal was purchased during a trip to South Australia, which helped make it more affordable.

O.o those are amazing!

Is it a combination of the particular stone AND the tumbler processing that creates that effect?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jessa1155 In reply to deserthaze [2010-10-16 10:53:21 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Some of these are hand-carved, some are cabbed and some are unfinished "rubs". We don't tumble high quality opals like these as it would waste too much precious material.

This right here is my dream come true. I've been collecting rocks and gems since I was about five years old, and I've developed a few long-term collection goals over the years. At the top of the list, tied for first place, are three goals: a top quality Paraiba tourmaline crystal, a purple star sapphire, and a collection of opals this beautiful.

Nice dream collection! Opals are our thing... we were both obsessed with them right from the beginning. Mark has some purple sapphire stars that he has locked away... they are INCREDIBLE! He's saving them for something super special I guess. We have some very nice faceted tourmaline gems and bi-color/tricolor gems... but we do not have a top quality TRUE Paraiba..... yet Our friend & associate Casey Swanson is a tourmaline addict and he has some Paraiba crystals that are gorgeous... check him out here~ [link]
Thanks for the nice comment!

Thank you so much for pointing me in his direction - I'm in love with his jewelry. I think I may have actually ended up favoriting his entire gallery.

That's just the beginning of my dream collection... *sighs*. Someday, I shall make it happen.
You actually have purple star sapphires? Oh, you lucky ducks. I can't wait to see what you end up doing with them.

Is it ok to put opals in water after they've been worked?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jessa1155 In reply to realityhelix [2008-03-26 12:44:22 +0000 UTC]

These stones have only been pre-formed or "rubbed" to expose some of the color. For display, since the refractive index of water and opal are very close putting opal in water will simulate what opal will look like when it's polished. But it's fine to store finished opals in water also. Opal contains water actually ** Opal is a form of silica chemically similar to quartz containing a variable amount of water within the mineral structure.

realityhelix In reply to jessa1155 [2008-03-26 21:46:12 +0000 UTC]

Well I knew there was water in Opal. Little bubbles of the stuff is what makes the sparkles in it. But I thought putting it in water after it had already been cut would make it crack when it dried back out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jessa1155 In reply to realityhelix [2008-03-26 21:51:26 +0000 UTC]

They can lose the water over time. Jewelry displays with extremely hot lights have led to the death of many opals Silica spheres are actually the cause of the color display in opal, not the water content

realityhelix In reply to jessa1155 [2008-03-26 22:04:35 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Yeah, I've noticed that some Opals in displays look like they've lost all their polish!
