On our last night in the city, Steve and I were out until the wee hours of the morning taking photos... we packed after and went to bed around 5am! Worth it to get to walk around the city and see NY at night.
Trying out panning again (hadn't done much of it since it was a project in my photo class back in Feb-ish 06)
This photo is so "New York" to me.. yellow cab, bright lights and the feel of a fast paced life.

you have to increase your f number (decrease aperture) so that you can have a longer exposure without overexposing. Lower your ISO to 100 too. Stand somewhere like a street corner where you'll have cars passing you by (or any moving object) and take the photo with your upper body steadily swinging horizontally to follow the direction of the car. Make sure you don't wobble up / down at all.. keep it in a smooth horizontal line.
Also have your camera set to AI Servo (i think that's the right one.. I always confuse them) so that your camera locks focus better onto a moving object.

but def NOT 2 images together. this is one shot.. I was panning (moving the camera at the 'same' speed as the cab, so the cab is in focus and the background is streaked)

try it where you are. you can do it with any moving vehicle at night (haven't tried it during the day.. dunno how well it would work b/c you'd get too much light with the longer shutter speed)
