How do you string it or whatever..o_o;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jesseth In reply to Soupcat [2012-02-11 23:25:19 +0000 UTC]
It has hooks in the neck, hands and feet to loop elastic through. The whole thing is a little tricky and nowhere as elegant as real bjds, but it works well enough X'3

ever considered doing some stop motion animation? he's standing in front of your 'Blue Sky Bird' which I have never realised before could be considered an epic naruto reference

This is so cool!
I'd like to try and make one myself, but I was wondering, how did you thread the elastic through him?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jesseth In reply to Fluffyhead [2011-02-22 23:50:38 +0000 UTC]
thanks! :3
oh! Yeah I probably should have put that info in there :0 I'll explain best I can, sorry if I ramble on too much~
to thread him, first when I was making him I made sure all the body parts were hollow, or had space to pull elastic through them, and stuck little hoops I made out of wire into the clay in the hands, feet and head, so that where the neck ankles and wrists are, there were parts to thread the elastic through.
When he was dry, I just pulled most of the elastic through by hand (it was a bit like threading beads), but in the parts where it got really fiddly, I used a fairly large needle and even a bit of wire at one point XD
in terms of how the elastic went through the body, I basically put the string through the neck loop, and then thread both halves/sides of the elastic into the torso, with one half going into the right arm, back into the body, down into the hips, through the right leg, and back through up to the neck. The other side did the left, and I knotted them back together through the neck loop. That way I only needed one piece of elastic and didn't have loose ends poking out all over the place X3
oh, it's also better to use too much elastic than too little- you can always pull loose strings tighter and trim the ends, but if you have too little, you have to thread the whole darn thing again X'D
hope that helps?

Fluffyhead In reply to Jesseth [2011-02-24 22:17:07 +0000 UTC]
Oh! I also forgot to ask, what sort of elastic did you use?
Did you use like...an actual elastic band, or elastic string?

Jesseth In reply to Fluffyhead [2011-02-25 00:20:19 +0000 UTC]
good point! I used elastic string, I got it from a fabric shop :3

Oh my, this is awesome! Keep practicing this because it's so adorable and it fits well with carapacians already having ball-jointed doll-like bodies.
I hope to do something like with with Snowman one day though, either clay or leather.
Also, there are other clays more suited for this like La Doll and Premier, they might be most costly than DAS though. The Micheals craft store I go to now and then sells both, I dunno where you get your supplies though. The internets is an excellent place to find rarer craft materials.

He actually looks tons better now X'D
I took him apart, repainted him (extra-shiny black, plus he now has a mouth), and took off those extra shoulder joints. He doesn't seem to want to stand up anymore, but in my opinion the change is worth it~

he's so cool! Now you've inspired me to give it a shot. @.@ We'll see if it ever happens though. xD How long did it take you? And how much did you end up spending on the clay?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jesseth In reply to Mocksee [2010-12-13 22:49:20 +0000 UTC]
ahaha, I made him in a couple of hours, left him to dry overnight, and painted him/put him together in a couple of hours in the morning! XD
then again, like I said he is very roughly made, so if I was going to make him properly, sand him down, varnish him and stuff, it would probably take a second day. Might do some of that tonight. XD
and the clay is just fairly cheap craft-shop clay, it was probably less than two dollars!

Jesseth In reply to Mocksee [2010-12-13 23:05:34 +0000 UTC]
yeah, although it was a different craft shop that focused more on fabric and sewing stuff. I got wire there too, although I didn't actually end up putting much in the doll (just as loops in the head/hands/feet), it really helped me with making the hollows and getting the elastic through after.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Mocksee In reply to Jesseth [2010-12-14 00:49:46 +0000 UTC]
Hmm the hollowing part sounds a little tricky. How did you do it?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Jesseth In reply to Mocksee [2010-12-14 01:00:41 +0000 UTC]
well the limbs were easiest, I moulded them to roughly the right shape, then punched through them with a darning needle, and did the last bits of neatening with the needle in so I didn't squash the hollows shut. Then just pulled the needle out when I was happy with them :3
bits like the torso I had to do by hand, and with a bit of help from whatever wires/sticks/needles ect were lying around XD.
I didn't really hollow the face like you're meant to, but if you wait till it's half-dry, the outside is more solid than the inside, so you can just puncture the head at the bottom and scoop out the brains clay. XD
I hollowed his head out, then put a small pink plastic heart inside, and filled it back up again (is a sentimental weirdo :'D)
