I'm assuming it's the symbol for the commissioner's favorite band. I could be wrong though, you'd have to ask her.

I usually do watercolor first? Mainly because it's usually the background and if I screw up and paint where I want to keep it white or something, the pencil will STILL color over the watercolor, so I can hide my mistakes somewhat.

I...don't even know what to say. I can't describe exactly what, but something about this piece just... moves me. I love it, it's beautiful and dark and amazing and SO many other things that I just can't describe. I'm completely in awe.

I'm really liking that background! Did you use rubbing alcohol to get the texture?

nope, just lots of water and going very, very heavy on the pigment/water ratio.

Okay. I use rubbing alcohol to get that sort of texture. I suggest doing a random session and using various materials to see what you can get. I do this all the time and I write down what I did so I can remember it.

well my main problem with rubbing alcohol is that you're introducing a HIGH amount of acids to your paper at that point. I'm honestly worried about the long term damage that would come from using that particular technique. (I have used it in the past though). I'm experimenting right now to check the materials I use and try to make sure I stick with items that are going to last. It's like John Palencar said... it's the best service you can do to your collectors, provide them with a piece of art that will withstand time. x.x my problem right now is the board I use isn't archival so I'm totally paranoid it's gogni to yellow. Meh.

It looks wonderful, though I must confess a certain degree of curiousity as to the nature of the image. What was the insperation?

None. It's a commission, so I work with the specifics that I'm given. In this case a photograph of the commissioner (for her likeness), the pose she wanted, and the specifics about the glowy symbol thingy in her hand, and the robe, staff and color choices.

hmmm.. I believe there is a story behind every picture and this one seems to have an interesting story. But I suppose that is for the commisioners thoughts only. It's a wonderful work all the same. ^^
