#10: Reptile

Reptile has taken so many different forms throughout the series, so I had a lot of flexibility in how I wanted to represent him. I like the bone motif in his MKX main costume, but some elements of that didn't fit with the rest of what I was doing. Fortunately, his MK9 costume has a similar thing going on, so that was primarily where I pulled from. His mask, however, is directly from MKX.

Because I knew how many little parts I'd have to make for him, I decided to make Reptile in two parts as I did with Goro. His bottom half was finished almost two weeks ago, and I made a good amount of progress on the top half. But then I kinda stalled out. Once I had the idea for my next game, my interest in sculpting was completely taken over, but I still had this final sculpture at roughly 70% complete that needed work. On Friday night, I stayed up until 3AM to get the sculpting done. On Saturday morning, all I had to do was put wires in his arms so they'd stay in place, and then bake him. Buuuut I made a pretty big mistake. While he was in the oven, I was watching Einar Solberg's acoustic/piano livestream. When the oven timer went off, I turned off the heat, but decided it would be fine to leave Reptile in there as it's ok if he gets a little over-cooked. When my show was over, I realized that I set my oven timer for five minutes more than it should have been, and all of that extra cooking caused the base to explode around where the wires are embedded. Thankfully, Reptile fell backwards instead of forwards, but there was still some damage. His middle finger on the right side now sits at an awkward, twisted angle, and his left arm is pulled back and twisted a bit. Also, some of the details on his back were flattened. I tried to fix the flattened parts with a dremel, but it didn't help much. I considered starting over, but since I don't want to sculpt for a while anyways, this would not have been a good time.

Now that he's painted, it doesn't look too bad. I wish the game dev bug bit me a few days later though because I think a few parts of his costume might have looked better if I had my heart in it more.

Anyways, that's it for Mortal Kombat Series 1. I still want to do the other games, but it'll probably be a long time before I start Series 2 as my free time will be spent elsewhere.
