Description
This is a re-imagining of the "Guardia Forest" segment of the classic SNES game, Chrono Trigger. For the full experience, I recommend listening to the music at the same time. (Yes, fellow nerds, I know that's the stage theme, not the battle theme. :dealwithit: )God I wish those guys were still "pushing the limits" with pixel-art; most of their ports and re-releases either don't upgrade the art, or make really formulaic, griddy stuff. So much wasted potential.
(C&C's probably not welcome - at this point, I don't think I care anymore. This has been sitting on my drive half-finished for the last few months, and I finally got around to polishing it up last night.)

Wow oh wow...This is absolutely gorgeous. So beautiful that I'm tearing up. And I agree with you--as much as I love CT...if it was remade like this on the DS instead of in its beloved original old-school SNES style...I'd still be so very happy.

Very cool piece of art, great look. There's so much brown it almost could have overwhelmed the piece, but it doesn't because you have spread out the bright greens and flashes of blue so well. The colours are very well balanced, which is tricky to do with so much brown. I love it! Great job.

It looks really great. I think, however, it would feel much more Chrono Trigger-ish if the characters were in Toriyama's style, though.

Yeah, I really don't like his style; I like a lot of anime styles, but his in particular rubs me the wrong way - what was nice about the game was that because they were so small, the sprites didn't really feel like his style. They just felt "generic", and that kept that from screwing up the game for me.

See, I've always felt the opposite. I've never had too much exposition to the Dragon Ball series, so when I first saw it, it seemed unique to other anime styles I've seen. And to some extent, it still is. I can see how some people don't like it, though, and I can appreciate that.
But I've just always associated Chrono Trigger with Toriyama. Even though the sprites were small, I could see the influences his style had on them. Seeing it in a different style doesn't really settle with me because of this association.

Well, I'm not you, so ... uh, tough. I don't draw what I dislike.
I also think it's very healthy for franchises to have their style totally redone in reboots. For example, if batman weren't allowed to be anything but the adam west incarnation, we'd have missed out on both the tim burton -and- christopher nolan takes, which frankly are some of the best superhero movies ever made.
Some people like one, some like another, but it's cool to have different takes on some core idea so everyone has a chance to like it.

Oh, no, don't misunderstand me. I can fully appreciate that you went for your own style and I respect you more for doing so. What I'm saying it it just doesn't feel like Chrono Trigger to me. It's still a very excellent piece and you should be proud of what you've done.

E.g. why this isn't some playable flash minigame. That'd put it what I'd consider "risky territory". Square isn't known to go after standalone art, just games that might actually compete with them.

background's maybe 40 colors, the individual chars are about 20 each (except the mushrooms which are 9).
Took about 3 nights.
