Description

My cousin Alfred is something of an embarrassment to me. He, if I may so refer to him, is a shapeless mass of flesh whose only recognisable feature is a large and well-developed mouth, complete with a perfect set of teeth. The doctors were understandably appalled when they cut him from his mother’s womb, but she decided to keep him, even when they told her he was probably nonviable.

My aunt has doted on Alfred since then. She has had to do so on her own, for her husband left as soon as he saw the creature he had helped to conceive. Alfred seems in perfect health, but has hardly grown since he was born, and that was seven years ago. He cannot move, or even speak, though he can produce a keening sound, like that uttered by gerbils when they have been left for too long without water.

My aunt takes this as a signal to feed him. His diet is restricted to semi-liquids because solids make him gag. My aunt also has to change his bedding when he soils it and has done so since she brought him home.

I do not know how my aunt endures the pressures of caring for Alfred. Most people would want to avoid such a creature, but my aunt speaks lovingly of him and spends her evenings by his cradle, rocking him and singing lullabies. Perhaps she hopes he will one day speak, though given his deficiencies it should be clear he never will. I sometimes imagine she longs for his death and with it a release from her burden.

I have not asked her if she does. When others raise the subject she becomes extremely defensive. Many scientists believe he should be examined more closely and have asked her to surrender him. She refuses to comply so he remains a more personal problem. I sometimes think she is doing the wrong thing in sustaining him.

If I ever voiced these thoughts my aunt would be horrified, just as she was horrified when I suggested she join a travelling circus and put Alfred on display. Nowadays the right thing to do is post photos on social media. My aunt does this regularly and earns a small but steady income. So far the only complaints have come from mothers of other exceptional children who feel they have been upstaged.

My aunt naturally prefers to hear from the new friends she has made: sympathetic people who say she is strong and brave. This may sound very superficial but her feelings for Alfred run deeper than this. She is firmly convinced of his humanity and believes he has a soul. I admire the depth of her empathy, though it strikes me as being a little obsessive, and may actually be a form of defence against a truth she would rather not face. Alfred bothers me as well, for although he can do me no physical harm, the knowledge that I am related to him is not a pleasant weight to bear.

Made me think of "Eraserhead" and also of the Monster of Glamis, a child born about 1800 in the Spencer family (it's in my genealogical charts) and died the day it was born. Because the midwife told hysterical tales , the matter could not be just "swept under the carpet". The mansion also may have a hidden lost room (of which stories have been told).

Or the acardiac twins. Cows sometimes birth mooncalves along with the normal calf, as they are NOT capable of properly developing 2 or more calves at the same time.o

The title in itself is brilliant. In the 70s something like this would have been made into a late night horror half hour special. Not many people would have slept after watching it.

Is this supossed to be an analogy of having mentally ill or severely crippled child and how pointless is to raising them? Or just a lazy son/daughter? It sure looks like that

Somehow you always manage to produce some of the most nightmare inducing Lovecraft tier imagery I've seen on this site.  (And I say this in the most complementary context possible)

Also, great accompanying narrative, very Kafkaesque.

It's a very kind comparison! I don't think my work comes close to the best I've read from Kafka or Lovecraft, but they've both been major influences.

Alfred has no brain? Perhaps it's small and underdeveloped. An interesting mix of satire that also coincidentally offers a commentary on the right to life? In real circumstances it's probably a hard decision to make. I know what the decision would be if faced with the option of providing a life for such a tragedy. I would personally not wish such an existence on anyone, or any other living being... having said that, I quite like this work. The veins that can be seen under the thin, almost translucent layer of skin give this biological failure a grounding in real life. I don't want to guess where or how it relieves itself. If the aunt did surrender him to science, I am confronted by the idea of walking into a sterile room filled with numerous genetically engineered  clones of countless fleshy mounds and open keening mouths.

This work reminds me of Patricia Piccini's sculptures. cookshillgalleries.com.au/page…

Dang, this reminds me A LOT about the "miracle baby" that was born with like 80% of his brain missing to some christian couple, they paraded him all over social media and bragged about what an "amazing miracle" and "gift from God" that he was before divorcing each other and giving the kid up for adoption. Quite cruel, if you ask me.

Oh hey lookie here, found the thing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw7RB2…

Very inspiring story, as usual. I fuckin love your stuff because it's so eerie and weird and absurd, believe it or not but your stuff has been quite the influence on me for the past few years. Keep it up, dude!

This is one of many short stories I wrote a long time ago but never got round to illustrating. I didn't mention social media as it wasn't used much at the time, and I'm glad I put it aside for so long as this version packs a harder punch.

It perfectly encompasses the weird tension between craving attention and a genuine need for community support you see with these mommy-bloggers - raising a disabled child is exhausting, but some of them seem to almost commercialize their suffering, and then you have to sit back and wonder how you can even begin to judge someone without being in that situation yourself. I just had a discussion with my sis after we watched an SVU episode where a mother murders her infant who will inevitably die painfully and young from a genetic disease; obviously you don't want to make euthenizing children legal because of the vast possibility for misuse and abuse, but on the other hand some of these children are so badly affected they're suffering horribly, or they're basically breathing corpses that will never develop a sense of selfhood. It's uncomfortable on a number of levels, which you capture in the story, and the weirdly smooth, sculptural, deeply creepy yet somehow inoffensive design of Alfred is perfect.

nah, I once saw a report about a genetic disorder which makes the muscles ridged, to the point that eventually the person who is affected will lose all movement and become immobile after they reach adulthood. The person actually has to chose between a sitting or lying down position...for the rest of their lives. I would not wish such a fate on anyone. ...I just think it's sadder when children are afflicted...Noa Pothoven was only 17. It's just sad.

Ah, Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, aka the proof that if there is a god it hates you. I'd rather choose death, honestly (As if I didn't have enough lack of motives to stay alive).

skrawll In reply to AlbionRaven [2019-08-22 01:09:18 +0000 UTC]

The report featured a bunch of people, including a kid of perhaps 9 years old. She had lost the ability to bend her right elbow and her shoulders were immobile. She would cry all the time because her muscles were beginning to freeze up and the condition is painful. I didn’t mean to quash your motivation there friend. I do agree that Fibrodysplasia is a horrible condition. Yeah, kids and serious illnesses, how is that fair?

Sort of, the patient must either be over 16, needs parental permission for ages 12-16.

ahh....I remember seeing something on the news some time ago about a teen called Noa Pothoven from the Netherlands who chose to be euthanized. Though I haven't really looked into the law surrounding this and what it entails. Anyway I think she was 17? She stated that chose to be euthanized because she said that the pain to live was unbearable. The parents claim that they were not told about the day of the event and only found out about it when they saw papers about it in their daughters bedroom. Not too sure if this last piece of information is real and it may just be fake news, or something.
