As a goth, this puzzles me. Why IS goth clothing more expensive? Seems like people are trying to cash in on the alternative lifestyle. Thats why I tend to buy cheap clothes and alter them.

There are many reasons for it. Unless you're being very clever, or very clumsy, it's going to cost more to make knee-high leather boots and internally reinforced corsets than T-shirts, jeans and sneakers. You're still right in saying some companies cash in on alternative lifestyles, though this doesn't start and end with goth! Capitalist economies actually thrive on diversity, as each new look or fashion trend gives them a new range of products to sell.
If you're not happy with this process, buying cheap or secondhand clothes is definitely the way to go, and making your own alterations is a great way to save money while creating your own unique look!

I usually find some pretty decent clothes in charity shops or bargain shops. I would usually alter them in various ways. Cutting off the sleeves, adding spikes or in the case with jeans, I rip them for a distressed look. I had an old pair of knee length boots and I added spikes to them for some killer goth boots.
To be honest, I woulden't mind the sale of alternative clothing...if it wasen't for the fact that they are way too expensive! Just the greedy capitalist economy cashing in on those who dare to be different.

very good, and very true!
your drawing is an accurate depiction of people who strive to be different and unique, people who desire to stand out from the crowd...
yet they must always spend $$$ or time in order to reach such a status.
and sometimes, when too many people are doing it, it stop being a ''unique'' status, and it becomes a common trend.
ironic!
good drawing, man!

Ex-Goths often run to Steampunk for the same reason. Then Hot Topic goes and tries to make crappy, overpriced "steampunk" items...

The only 'mindless consumerism' here is neglecting that most of these clothes were made by the hands of underpaid and overworked Chinese factory workers; otherwise, who cares what you wear--it's not like it's going to save a polar bear or anything.

I'm into Goth, but not ALL Goth, lol...mainly the cyber variety...and not be all like "Hey, look at me! I'm different! I'm not mindless", no, in fact, I don't really like it when everyone is like, "Oh, hey, look at him! He's dressed weird! He's different!"
I like the dark, industrial/cyber Goth style because I think it really looks cool, and I don't really have much clothing like it, though. >>
But, yeah, you bring up a good point that if someone buys a LOT of items for a style, then claims to not be a consumer, then they obviously are blind, lol...

This is so true and I love you for it.
Also, I like the addition of skellington, because everyone that's unique has SOMETHING with him on it.

You'll like my new comic strip (if it ever gets off the ground), it's "Called Protect The Stupid". People who try to be different by dressing exactly like all the other people who are trying to be different.

Cheers mate! I'll say one thing for metalheads though - most of them are saner than goths.
The goth's based on an old acquaintance who went to a club in Berlin for New Years' and spent the whole night complaining that she was the best dressed person there. The scene's a lot smaller in Australia, but it attracts some real crazies. There may be a connection there...

and it's so true... well i'm not in the goth scene but in the metalscene and there is also no difference to the goths... they are screaming how mindless other people buy their stuff... but spent money over money to look different.... stupid... just stupid
i like the way you draw the goth - made me laugh
nice message
