Description yes!... I finished my Hellhound... however.... this is quite a bit different than my ussual pictures.... My first attempt at Photoshop painting a background EVER!!! I don't know how well I did... it kinda looks okay to me, the fire doesn't quite look right and the clouds need help... and you guys can tell those are supposed to be rocks right? Anyways it was an interesting experience... I'm hoping I can do a better job next time... it still only looks so-so to me.

I probably need some suggestions and would LOVE some critiques,

thank you so much! I'm flattered! .... ps... the blue stuff WAS supposed to be fire.... now it's water by popular oppinion

Oh. That's dumb. I knew that it was fire; it's just very heavy looking fire. /^-^\ what program did you use to make the fire anyhow? It LOOKS like you used the fingerpaint option with a dry media brush in 'smudge'...but I'm probably wrong X3

Jianre-M In reply to InsomniacOvrLrd [2006-10-18 20:17:53 +0000 UTC]

fingerpaint option? not sure I'm familiar with that.... No I used a simple soft brush in photoshop, and used a textured blur brush for the edges. No wacom either just with a Mouse, it was my first attempt at fire. Some people thought it was crashing waves and others thought it was water creatures... and stuff.

ah. When you're using the smudge tool (it's under the same button as blur and sharpen), in the top toolbar, there is a little checkbox next to the smudge paramaters which says 'fingerpaint'. selecting it drops a dab of whatever color you have selected down where you click to start smudging, so that you can 'push' a new color around into the stuff already there.

...sorry if that was a bit of a rambling explaination. I find that useful for fire effects though. I have a...slightly less than apropriate pic called 'pillow fight', and the background of that is a good example of what that technique can do /^-^\

these are in Adobe Photoshop CS2? I'll have to look around then.... I know you can do 'liquify' which sounds similar to your finger-paint thing.

InsomniacOvrLrd In reply to Jianre-M [2006-10-19 02:46:51 +0000 UTC]

lol, yeah, i'm talking CS2. /^-^\ It's there. Smudge, checkbox 'finger paint'

right click the blur or sharpen tool and in the little pull down box where you clicked, select smudge.
then, to the right of all of the brush parameters on the toolbar up top of the window, there's a little check box that says "finger painting" /^-^\

if you're still lost, i'll upload a picture to scraps to show you where it is /^-^\

I'm sure I can find it!! I just never knew to look for it! @_@ but then I don't do much 'smudging' as a general rule.

The whole name and color and shape of it really reminds me of those creatures in Dirge of Cerberus. Only this is fluffier, cuter, and doesn't have a tentacle on it's head with a completely unnatural-looking metallic thing. Blueeee, shinneeeyyy.... O.O

That looks awsome! I love the colours, very well done! I think the clouds could do with being blured a bit and the fire needs some dodge brush work on it, thats my oppinion any way. Great pic! x

Thanks! and you are the first person to think it was FIre!!! everyone else thinks it's waves or water creatures...

It's good advice, I'll remember that.

This is great!!! For some reason I'm thinking Ifrit Jr. hehe, but seriously, the hound is cool and the background is interesting. My favorite part about the background has to be the water (even though it's technically not located in the background, but all around). Great job.

Everything looks deadly enough to suit the Hound's mood, if you ask me!! ..of course, I'd have a bright background you know? Instead of darkness? Because that's just me haha

Jianre-M In reply to PeoplesBadmash [2006-10-02 16:19:40 +0000 UTC]

it's a very good Idea, I just wanted him to stand out.... it still needs alot of tweaking I think, so thanks for the suggestions!

That's what I thought too, a dark & sinister Hell Hound would surely stand out in something totally bright.. but not bright & cheerful unless it's the Hound's day off or something haha~

lol... it just takes practice kiddo! actually I have to do a lot of tweaking after I scan.. we have a combo scanner printer thingy it wasn't super expensive but it works surprisingly well! (can't copy worth beans... it scans with too much grey, but that can be edited... but it's printing? )

It is an "Epson Stylus CX3810", and my brother bought it at "Fry's Electronics" it was about $80 with a $20 mail in rebate! Like I said... works well... except at copying, but it's also a fax machine and has a phone line, and does GREAT printing at the higher settings!

Jianre-M In reply to orangecriti [2006-10-04 00:10:59 +0000 UTC]

just remember it scans with a little extra grey... if you have an editing program (like photoshop) adjusting the levels will fix the problem!

Here's my take on your pic:

Your water creatures on the foreground lean toward the right. How about spreading them across the foreground while not overdoing it - only enough that we get the idea that the hound (which would be the focal point of the image) is surrounded by them? Oh and yes blur them again.

Now the hound is gazing directly towards the camera rather than the right side of the image. You could then like make the eyes glow red or something.

And here's the trick to the glowing eyes:
instead of making a mere blurred circle over the eyes, add a thin glowing red horizontal line over it and see how that works.

Now that all that's set up, we go to your sky.

Make the camera angle into like.... viewed from the ground into the sky (midget view?). Then make a horizontal gradiation on the sky plus the clouds would go like... in circular formation of something (like how the clouds are like when there's a nuclear bomb blast).

If the ifnal image is portrait, I'd add some typography of something. If landscape, maybe black bars on the top and bottom to give it a cinematic look ^_^

Again, that's my take
You do have something going on with that image.
Keep on drawing (look who's talking) !!

Nice!!

I love the drama portrayed by this one (especially blurring those water thingies was a nice touch).

Not sure about the clouds though (and the purple too).... color harmony problems maybe?

Jianre-M In reply to Dennis-Pulido [2006-10-02 01:16:52 +0000 UTC]

just playing around with it actually, I originally thought the sky should be red and orange but I wanted to the hellhound to stand out alot.... so I tried to make his surroundings mostly cool colors,... the purple looked pretty good to me, (but that was also before I added the blue...water... flame... whatever thingies)

very interesting! Thanks, (actually the blue stuff was supposed to be fire.... but nobody thinks so,... so water creatures work too.) I'll have to see If I can fiddle around with this one, I wasn't entirely satisfied with it as it is. I'll take those suggestions into consideration as well!
