Description I drew this to welcome one of my favourite characters, Apollo, back to the world of printed comics. When Wildstorm closed up shop I was saddened, because I would not see him again, probably for a long time... but he came back sooner than I was expecting! He will soon be appearing in the DCU proper, starring in Stormwatch , and I'm very excited! His costume was redesigned, and he got a haircut, though. The costume has grown on me, somewhat, but I miss his hair!

Anyway... for some reason, I felt like I had to go full on superhero for this one, even though the Stormwatch crew vehemently denies that they are 'superheroes'. And I knew he had to be happy, because he always was the cheerful and friendly one when he was in The Authority, and the sun had to be in it. this is what came out.

I made a slideshow of progress on this pic

You definitely draw him better than canon does.Good job here!

hehehe... thanks. My initial enthusiasm has dimmed since I drew this, I admit. >.> I think the new artist, Will Conrad, is pretty good though, so at least Stormwatch is *looking* good now... (aside from Midnighter's hideous costume)

The costume looks really streamline and sexy the way you have illustrated it. Prolly bc ive only seen it on him on the covers so far so im still like idk bc i haven't seen it in action. But definitely yes on teh hair. I miss that shiz like mad, and I STILL after 4 issues don't understand the chinspike man...

While I have had some problems with Stormwatch... At least he got his halo back last issue, and the eternal tradition of him shredding his clothes returned. I was worried that his halo was gone along with his hair. I mean, he had it on a couple covers, but then those covers got replaced... and his FISTS always glowed, not his head. It was annoying, because that was one of his most distinctive features.

but yeah, Midnighter's chinspike... that's gotta go. And he needs his coat.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

lady-toyano In reply to JillJohansen [2011-12-23 06:32:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I did glee on the Halo bc that is such a defining character trait for Apollo. That glowing halo coming at ya about to lay the smack down on ya! I also was just commenting to a bud of mine about that, bc another notable thing about Apollo is that his clothes can never stay on haha. He's not as bad as the Ray where his clothes just burst in to flame as soon as he touches them, but man for a nearly indestructible guy his clothes never matched up in durability. I'm not going to lie though, I have always loved it! The less clothes Apollo had on after a battel, the more intense the fight was. It was so nice seeing a dude get some live battle damage for once, but after a while I just kept going "you exhibitionist tease Apollo you haha".

See usually after awhile of seeing things i grow used to it and its just something I overlook. I still miss the heck out of Apollo's hair, I'm not gonna harp on it bc im looking at it as these are his younger days and he rocked a buzz cut till he realized how much better he looked with his flowing locks (we all do crazy things in our youth). I also miss his hair being white too -_-. I liked the white hair man...ok, done. That's also a liberty i give to Midnighter when it comes to his trench coat of badassery at the moment. He's obviously experimenting with some crazy things at the moment and making the best defense possible so that explained 95% of the access spiketitude he's got going on... But uh yeah, that chin-spike. father flip that crap. it's just in terrible taste and just can't see how they thought that was cool, acceptable, useful, or heaven forbid fashionable. Every time i get into a scene im drawn to the chin spike and i just start frowning like mad...it's such a mode upsetter for me, ugh...I pray they make the realization that's it's not catchy at all and was just a design blooper so get rid of it soon.

Well, he's indestructible, spandex (or in this case, jeans and a t-shirt) not so much. I always liked him shredding up his costume, not just for the blatant manservice, but because as you said, it was a nice indicator that the fight was tough. As for the blond hair... I am hoping that, if not Cornell, then Jenkins (or whoever follows him if he doesn't stay past the 2 issues he's solicited for) make it so that Apollo has been dying his hair in order to maintain a low profile while he was trying to remain hidden. It would make sense, and we can get the white hair back once it grows/washes out. If you look at Cully Hamner's design, it is still white there, he just used a yellowish shade for the shadows. The colourists goofed, and now he seems to be stuck with it. They do seem to be fine tuning the designs, though, so there is still hope... Midnighter's eyes, for instance. First his actual irises were red, and for some reason his skin was black inside the eye holes of his cowl. (he's not exactly the type to bother putting makeup on around his eyes like that) then they made it so that he had red lenses in his cowl, which while different from how it used to be, I prefer to red irises, because red eyes is kinda Jack's thing, we don't need two characters with red eyes on the same team. At least this way, when the cowl comes off his eyes can be brown, or whatever else, it was never exactly consistent to begin with. Just as long as it's a normal color.

lady-toyano In reply to JillJohansen [2011-12-26 21:38:31 +0000 UTC]

YYeessshhhhh, this hair dieing theory sits quite rite with me. Maybe that is also why he keeps it short? perhaps as to not have so much to die maybe?
Hrm, thanks for pointing out all those inconsistentces bc I was just checking out the red eye thing on Midnighter and was wondering what they were trying to do there, then saw the lenses and went smooth recon guys. I didn't pay much attention to the black around the eyes since this comic uses quite a bit of black in the cracks, so I just probably wrote it off as an ever pressing shadow (shadows are such convenient cover up tools haha).
Hey i'm cool with the fine tuning, it's actually pretty neat watching how they go through the process when changing hings the first couple issues, but I pray that by 10, they've got it under wraps. I hope that when we finally get to see Midnighter unmasked that they have also kept him a red head (along with his brown eyes). I quite enjoy bad azz red head Midnighter.

I really like this drawing, it's amazing!

I loved his long hair... not that the short one doesn't fit him, not at all, but still, his hair were so beautiful! Oh, I don't know, I'll go for the "nice for a change". Yeah, Apollo must be my second favourite after Midnighter : )

This is great.
I'm loving the costume redesign (the old was always way too bland for me. There was nothing *interesting about it), but I miss the hair, and I miss Midnighter's awesome old look. The chinspike looks so. stupid. ~shakes fist at Jim Lee~

I'm not really sure about Apollo's new looks. He's still fine (could he be not?)but I liked the classic costume and his amazing hair.
As for the Midnighter, he looked way better before, he had such a fascinating outfit.

But it doesn't really matter all that much right now, I'm too busy thinking that the Reboot confuses me like hell O_O

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

invader-tessa In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-12 03:32:00 +0000 UTC]

I liked the costume until the waist. If there had been *anything* there--a belt, another strip of color, *anything*--it would've been OK to me. But the white all the way down with nothing interrupting it was just boring and I didn't like it. I still don't love Lee's costume, but I do like it a little better. It's more visually interesting.
I agree with you about his hair and Midnighter's costume.
And the confusing. I missed that the guy with Jenny was Adam One from earlier in the book and was like "Wow, I feel bad for hoping the Doctor dies so Midny and 'Pollo can adopt Jenny again". I FAIL. I'm actually interested in why J'onn is there, though. Hello, new addition to my pull list.

Oh, incidentally, did Jenny have a middle name before and somehow I messed it, or did they just make up the "Emily" or whatever in the New 52?

Yeah, I don't get anything anymore, she's a kid and the new versions of her classic-universe parents just met each other O_O

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

invader-tessa In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-13 01:39:35 +0000 UTC]

I don't *remember* her having a middle name, but then, I couldn't actually *read* the issues she was introduced in because of Quitely's art. It was *bad* in those issues. I like it, though. I think it suits her.

I like her better as a kid. It always bothered me that she aged so quickly in Revolutions. Baby!Jenny was adorable, and kiddo!Jenny was even more so. No one could draw her a consistent age after the jump. It was kind of disappointing. But she *looks* eleven, so that's actually kind of nice, her being the age of the century.

I'm actually interested in seeing how this goes. Cornell is a *really* good writer, and I think watching them flirt will be awkward and hilarious and sweet. As long as he doesn't have Midnighter bring Apollo human hearts. ~stares at Ennis~

Yeah, there needs to be the flirting

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

invader-tessa In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-13 07:20:04 +0000 UTC]

At least there *will* be flirting. I think, thankfully, DC realizes that they will lose a considerable amount of their readership for Stormwatch if they didn't say "yeah, they're going to be together". Small favors.
Really, though, Midnighter was showing off at the end of the issue. "Hey look how badass I am. Aren't I fucking adorable?"

I just realized they're probably going to cut down on the swearing, aren't they.

JillJohansen In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-12 22:33:00 +0000 UTC]

I think the middle name is new. I asked Paul Cornell on his blog, and he says Apollo and Midnighter will have actual for real names now, too. I'm not sure if this means no amnesia about their past or what.

Yeah, but we already know that's out the window. They only just met in Stormwatch.... depends on how it's handled I guess. I'd bet money though that Apollo's name will be Neil Sinclair, like in Project: Superman

I meant that I'm not sure giving them names is such a good thing. But as you say this, too, will probably depend on how it gets done.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JillJohansen In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-15 12:47:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it will be weird to be able to call them.... whatever their names are, after over 10 years of them not having names! It really makes me wonder what, exactly, their origins are. I knew Bendix was likely not going to be in, but I had assumed they'd still be super soldiers of some variety, but now I'm not so sure....

JillJohansen In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-12 01:25:50 +0000 UTC]

I think Midnighter could be saved if they ripped that ludicrous spike off his chin and gave him a coat. I could live with the spikes on his knees and the new cowl minus chin spike, if he had his coat. Thankfully, it's an easy thing to add, and hopefully they come to their senses. Apollo... I liked his old costume, but I can see the logic behind his new one, it actually makes sense, given the nature of his powers. If you are a solar battery, fuelled by sunlight, it does not make sense to cover up every inch of skin aside from your face, the short sleeves and wide neck make sense because of that. More sunlight can be absorbed. So I can live with his costume, though I think the boots looks silly. (you will note, I did my best to hide them ) But the hair! he needs his hair. I am getting the sense that DC doesn't rally understand that his hair was damned sexy. and then, to make matters worse, in the comic he's a blond, and not a hint of the halo. it irks me. Not a single thing was carried over from his Wildstorm appearance. I hope it's at least revealed he dyed his hair to keep a low profile, or something.

BakaSara In reply to JillJohansen [2011-09-12 13:09:54 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't worry much about the silly boots, no reader's gonna notice them when there's a big yellow arrow pointing to his crotch : P

I agree with you, even with the part of Apollo's outfit "logic".

The Midnighter definitely needs his coat (apart from the extra spikes removed). Midnighter with no coat is like he was going around naked - which I wouldn't be that unhappy about, but still.

Yeah, Apollo's hair was just one of those untouchable, sacred things. It's white, and it's long. Period. There is midnighteriously no other way it could go. I hated to see it blonde and honestly if maybe, in a remote way, I can vaguely understand that they cut it to change his look, I just don't get why it would ever need to be blonde instead of pure white. It's pissing me off as I write it รจ_รฉ

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JillJohansen In reply to BakaSara [2011-09-12 22:27:30 +0000 UTC]

I know! I see no logic behind the color change. As I said I am hoping it's dyed (he is in hiding, after all, and white hair on a young guy is conspicuous) or maybe a simple colorist error. It's white on some covers and in the design, so.... the length is sadly a lot harder to fix.

After this talk I've decided to do 'fixed' versions of Apollo and Midnighter. coat, long hair etc. but try to keep some elements of the new designs...

Mhh... Will the Authority team be intact or since this is a new "universe" they're all going to be redesigned and the last seen members will be replaced?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

JillJohansen In reply to HellTutor [2011-08-22 16:49:27 +0000 UTC]

The Stormwatch team is:

Apollo
Midnighter
The Engineer
Jack Hawksmoor
Jenny Q

Plus Martian Manhunter and 3 new characters, The Eminence of Blades, Adam One, and The Projectionist

They are not 'coming over' from the WSU, that's still continuing on as it was before. They have always lived in the DCU, so none of the old continuity applies. And yes, are getting some background tweaks and redesigns (well, Jack looks pretty much the same). (as are a lot of core DCU characters) Apollo and Midnighter will be meeting for the first time in issue one, for instance... but yes, they will end up together. Personally, I'm OK with this, as I think a lot of mistakes were made with the characters towards the end, they had become almost parodies of themselves, and they kinda needed a fresh start. Paul Cornell also seems to really 'get' the tone of book is needed for them (it sounds like The Authority meets Planetary) and what makes the characters tick.

JillJohansen In reply to NonieR [2011-08-22 06:01:26 +0000 UTC]

I didn't see the hair as stereotypical. There are plenty of very masculine straight men with long hair, and he always came off as fairly masculine in most stories. (certain writers made him into the chick, but generally) So yeah, if that was the reason, a stupid decision.
